Note

I'll need to expand on this at some point when I'm not frantically trying to finish a grant proposal. 😅 For the moment I'm copying content from my Astronomy 253 slides from 2014.

Faraday rotation is a technique to infer information about electron density $n_e$ and parallel magnetic field $B_∥$ along the line of sight. It is used in astrophysics (e.g., to diagnose galactic magnetic fields) and high energy density physics.

When polarized light propagates through a magnetized region with free electrons, the left- and right-circularly polarized components travel with different phase velocities. There is rotation of the electric field vector:

$$ Δφ ∝ λ^2 \int_0^L n_e(l) B_∥(l) dl $$

...

Some notes:

  • It is hard to disentangle variations in $n_e$ and $B_∥$. Three wavelengths are often needed.
