Not every historical dialogue between the two fields has been productive: that is, in addition to holding this complicated conversation, there needs to be a focus on the meanings of the public good inside national contexts, in our case, the U.S. Therefore, combining the histories of curriculum and educational leadership requires what William Pinar called currere, and our critiques move from theory and practice to praxis.

Across findings was the strong joint decision-making and collaboration thus creating a robust system of admissions for the beginning stage of the principal pipeline. When universities and districts are mutually looking to prepare dynamic, diverse school leaders, they would benefit from real, profound relationship and partnership building. This case demonstrated how a contextualized, positive university-district relationship can result in the sum being greater than the parts.

Educational leadership preparation programs bear the responsibility of preparing culturally competent school leaders. Few programs assess their graduate students’ cultural competence and its development. Using the Cultural Competence for Educational Leaders (CCEL) instrument, this convergent triangulation mixed methods study examines change in cultural beliefs and motivation, cultural knowledge, cultural skills and the overall cultural competence of students after going through a redesigned combined Master’s Degree and educational leadership certification program. Qualitative data were gathered through focus group interviews, an open-ended survey question, and program document analysis. Findings show statistically significant increases in graduates’ cultural knowledge, beliefs and motivations, and skills. Changes were perceived to be influenced by the cohort model, culturally...

There have been three distinct research agendas: the first involves attempts to define the meaning(s) of educational leadership for social justice; the second is the descriptive documentation of school leadership behaviors which address social injustices and inequities within schools; and, the third focuses on the development of leadership preparation programs that include social justice as a curricular foundation. This paper is delimited to a review of literature documenting the relationship between social justice and leadership preparation programs, highlighting specific pedagogies, and building towards a curriculum. We take a chronological perspective moving from early theoretical conceptions of social justice to early studies on preparation programs and then focus on second generation empirical research centered on social j...

Finding a lack of appropriate instrumentation to test this assumption, a valid and reliable instrument was created for that purpose. Three cognitive processes associated with strategic thinking were identified as potential distinguishers between successful leaders and less successful leaders: reflection, systems thinking and reframing. A literature review of these processes was conducted, definitions for each of the processes were created and then potential items to describe them were developed. These definitions and items were submitted to an expert panel for content validation and refinement. The instrument was then administered to 113 practitioners to test item reliability. This test yielded a Cronbach’s alpha for the total instrument (.91). The reliability coefficients for the subscales were Systems Thi...

This qualitative study captures the leadership experience of principals during the apocalyptic crisis _ the COVID-19 pandemic - beginning from the time schools were closing in March 2020 to the end of the school year in June. Crisis leadership, transformative leadership and social capital constitute the overarching framework for this study. The purpose of this case study was to discover how principals engaged in their thinking and practice to handle the compound crisis, in order to generate a rich description and gain an understanding of school leadership during the first phase of the COVID 19 pandemic. Our research questions were: What were the challenges...
