Medieval silver mount or strap fitting
Kirjeldus
English: An incomplete silver mount dating to the Medieval period. It is rectangular in plan, consisting a hollow raised central quatrefoil-shaped boss superimposed on a silver sheet backing. The upper edge of the backing demonstrates two small circular apertures, while the lower is crumpled upwards in old damage, though three circular apertures can be seen when the mount is viewed from the back. These presumably allowed the mount to be riveted or sewn to a larger object. The upper face of the boss is decorated with engraved design of a cross fleury within a lozengiform border and foliate motifs in the rounded outer spandrels.
Date: c. 1250-1400
Dimensions: The mount measures 13.77mm in length, 10.92mm wide by 3.26mm thick at its midpoint, and weighs 1.48g.
Discussion: No exact parallel could be found for this mount, though the style of its decoration is suggestive of a Medieval date.
The object contains more than 10% precious metal and is over 300 years old. Consequently, it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.
