ARAN CROCHET DOG SWEATER PATTERN
SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZED DOGS
Abbreviations – bpdc - back post double rept - repeat
dc - double crochet crochet st(s) – stitch(s)
sc – single crochet bphdc - back post half double rem - remaining
mc – main colour crochet t - turn your work
cc – contrasting colour fphdc – front post half double nxt - next
inc – Increase - 2 x dc in the crochet sp - space
same st ch - chain dc2tog - double crochet 2
fpdc – front post double sk – skip together
crochet slst - slip stitch
You will need –
5mm crochet hook
2 balls of Aran worsted weight yarn in 2 colours

US terminology used
Use this pattern as a guide only
Measure your dog’s neck and chest and use these measurements as a starting point.
Choose which size would suit your dog best, you will be prompted when to adjust the length.
The numbers at the end of each round in brackets, are the amount of stitches you should have at the end of
that row.
The ch 1 does not count as a stitch, always work into the 1st stitch of the row unless otherwise stated.
Work in rounds, do not turn unless otherwise stated.
Approximate measurements of finished sweater -
Small – length 33 cm, neck 29 cm, chest 38 cm
Medium – length 40 cm, neck 35 cm, chest 43 cm
Large - length 47 cm, neck 40 cm, chest 50 cm
Gauge - 12 dc and 7 rows = 4" [10 cm]
Small –
With cc / ch 36 / slst to form a ring, being careful not to twist
Row 1 – ch 1 / sc around slst to 1st sc (36)
Rows 2 and 3 – ch 1 / fpdc into 1st st / bpdc into nxt / rept around / slst to 1st fpdc (36)
Fasten off the cc and attach the mc
Rows 4 to 7 – ch 1 / dc around / slst to the 1st dc (36)
At this point try the neck piece on your dog and make sure the length is just about reaching the arm pits.
You may need to add or subtract rows for the correct fit for your dog
Row 8 – ch 1 / ** dc into nxt 6 / inc into nxt / rept from ** 4 more times / inc into last / slst to the 1st dc (42)
Making the leg holes -
Row 9 – ch 1 / dc 3 / ch 8 / sk 6 / dc 26 / ch 8 / sk 6 / dc 1 into 1st st / slst into 1st dc
Row 10 – ch 1 / dc across the 3 dc + 8 chs + 26 dc + 8 chs + 1 dc / slst into 1st dc (46)
Rows 11 to 17 - ch 1 / dc around / slst into 1st dc / fo mc (46)
Lay the sweater on its side and line up the armholes.
Find the center st, count 9 to the left and attach the yarn.
Row 18 – ch 1 / dc2tog over the nxt 2 sts / dc 26 / dc2tog over the nxt 2 sts / fasten off the mc (28)
Row 19 - attach the cc / ch 1 / t / dc back across the 28 dc you have just worked / sc loosely down the
sides (you may need to place a few sc on the side of the dc) / sc around the underside, back up the sides /
slst to the 1st dc that you worked
Rows 20 and 21 - ch 1 / fpdc into 1st st/ bpdc into 2nd st / rept across / t
Leg hole edging –
Row 1 – attach yarn under the leghole / sc around making sure to have an even number of stitches
(approx. 18)
Row 2 – ch 1 / t / fphdc into 1st st / bphdc into nxt st / rept around / slst to the 1st fphdc
Repeat for the other leg
Fasten off, weave in ends
Medium -
With cc / ch 42 / slst to form a ring, being careful not to twist
Row 1 – ch 1 / dc across / slst to 1st dc (42)
Rows 2 to 4 – ch 1 / fpdc into 1st st / bpdc into nxt / rept around / slst to 1st fpdc (42)
Fasten off the cc and attach the mc
Rows 5 to 8 – ch 1 / dc around / slst to the 1st dc
Row 9 – ch 1 / ** dc 6 / inc into nxt / rept from ** around / slst to the 1st dc (48)
Row 10 - ch 1 / dc around / slst to the 1st dc
Making the leg holes -
Row 11 – ch 1 / dc 4 / ch 10 / sk 8 / dc 28 / ch 10 / sk 8 / dc in the 1st dc / slst to the 1st dc
Row 12 – ch 1 / dc across the 4 dc + 10 chs + 28 dc + 10 chs + 1 dc / slst to the 1st dc (53 in total)
Rows 13 to 19 – ch 1 / dc across / slst to the 1st dc / fo mc (53)
If needed adjust the length here by repeating row 19
Lay the sweater on its side and line up the armholes.
Find the centre st, count 8 sts to the left and attach the yarn.
Row 20 - ch 1 / t / dc2tog over the nxt 2 sts / dc 34 / dc2tog over the nxt 2 sts (36)
Row 21 - ch 1 / t / dc2tog over the nxt 2 sts / dc 32 / dc2tog over the nxt 2 sts / fo mc (34)
Row 22 – attach the cc / ch 1 / t / dc back across the 34 dc you have just worked / sc loosely down the
sides (you may need to place a few sc on the side of the dc) / sc around the underside, back up the sides /
slst to the 1st dc that you worked
Rows 23 to 25 – ch 1 / t / fpdc in the 1st st / bpdc in the nxt/ rept across
Leg hole edging –
Row 1 – attach yarn under the leg hole / ch 1 / hdc around making sure to have an even number of sts
(Approx. 22)
Rows 2 and 3 – ch 1 / t / fphdc in the 1st st / bphdc in the nxt st / rept around / slst to the 1st fphdc
Repeat for the other leg
Fasten off, weave in ends
Large –
With cc / ch 48 / slst to form a ring, being careful not to twist
Row 1 - ch 1 / dc across / slst to 1st dc (48)

Fasten off the cc and attach the mc

Row 25 - ch 1 / t / dc2tog over the nxt 2 sts / dc 36 / dc2tog over the nxt 2 sts (38)
