Douglas Adams
Douglas Adams created all the various and contradictory manifestations of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: radio, novels, TV, computer game, stage adaptations, comic book and bath towel. He lectured and broadcast around the world and was a patron of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and Save the Rhino International. Douglas Adams was born in Cambridge, UK and lived with his wife and daughter in Islington, London, before moving to Santa Barbara, California, where he died suddenly in 2001.

The first book gets you hooked and if you loved it as much as I did you will read them all. The hilarious jaunt through space and time continues. The author has a wonderful way of writing British humor. If you don't get the the jokes you won't like the book. - Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5

Published in 1980, this is the follow-up to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I enjoyed the first book very much, so thought I would give this one a try. It is another absurdist space-and-time-travel adventure filled with nerdy humor, which happens to be something I enjoy (but will of course not be to everyone’s taste). It is playful, especially with mathematical concepts and there is even a math joke at the end. Adams gives hints along the way, so what appears to be a typo is math humor. The characters are eccentric (this is a severe understatement) and the plot is zany. I particularly enjoyed the extraterrestrial receptionist and the depressed android. It is a satire of bureaucracy and leadership. It contains philosophical concepts dressed up in humorous costumes. What a fun read! - Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5

Although I rarely read science fiction, I was intrigued enough by the first book to try the second. I think I’m probably done with this series now. The second book had little of the charm of the first book, and I didn’t find the humor all that amusing. It reads like a series of sketches with little to tie them together. - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

I mean, it's a Hitchhiker's Guide book, of course it's good. Marvin continues to be one of the funnier characters in literature and the book never shies away from its absurdity, while still tying up its own narrative threads and calling back (and ahead, and likely headaback) to its own ideas. It's got its own bit of social commentary as well, which I received nicely, though not as well as I tend to take Pratchett's stuff.
Still, can't fault it for anything; just, again, like Piranesi, not *quite* in the holiest-of-holies of my reading pleasure. Four and a half stars. - Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5

Having thoroughly enjoyed a re-read on audio of the first book in the series, I immediately jumped into the second. However, I haven't read this book since I was a teen and I definitely didn't recall that this book had decidedly less appeal for me (although it may work great for others). The core four characters end up split up a lot over the course of the novel and several of the gags carry on too long for my taste. It has its funny moments but ultimately, I didn't have a great time time with it. Also, while the first book was narrated by Stephen Fry, who I adore as a narrator, this second book is read by Martin Freeman. I am very fond of Freeman as an actor but some of the character voice choices made for this book (by either Freeman or the director) were not my jam. If I opt to continue rereading this series, I'll definitely be doing so in print. - Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5

This book is all about time travel and the problem of time paradox.
When you time travel to the end of the universe the restaurant always have your reservation, because you already paid. when you leave the restaurant and return to your time, you pay the check, and it's always cheap, because it stays in an account and earns interest until the end of the universe.
See the idea? - Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5

Like the first book in this series, this is chaotic, rambling, and short. However, along the way, it’s quite entertaining, and it features a few memorable ideas that you may find referenced here and there in other places:
1. Arthur locking up the computer by demanding a cup of tea.
2. The Total Perspective Vortex (and Zaphod’s reaction to it).
3. The spaceliner delaying takeoff for 900 years, waiting for supplies of damp napkins for the passengers (in suspended animation).
4. Milliways, the restaurant at the end of the universe; and the Dish of the Day.
5. The Golgafrincham B Ark.
It remains basically a radio comedy series rather than a novel (or novella). - Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams is a sequel to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and this science fiction comedy continues on with the adventures of Arthur Dent and his travelling companions that include Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox, Trillian and Marvin, the depressed robot.
The stage is set when the book opens with Arthur almost killing everyone on board the spaceship “Heart of Gold” because he craves a cup of tea. The story, as it moves along is strange and random as it pretty much exists without a plot but our characters do get to visit Milliways, the restaurant at the end of the universe to enjoy a meal. Although silly and seemingly pointless, the author has managed to sneak in some strong philosophic questions that are meant to encourage you to think but unfortunately, I found the story had an outdated feel, very much like it’s time had passed.
Still, the story is packed with a lot of funny moments and absurd generalities as we join the intergalactic road trip. The author obviously loves to present to his readers the bizarre and inexplicable which he formats into random wordplay that become timeless quotes. This series is not meant to be taken seriously, it’s a joke and exists in order to allow us to laugh at ourselves and our funny ways. - Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5

It seems Douglas Adams' humour gels with me, I actually laughed out at some points. The book started off really well, but towards the end it lost its 'spark' and began to feel heavy and dragging. I'll still read the next installment, hoping it has got the humour the beginning of this book had. - Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5

I like this series of books beyond any reason or justification so my review of this book probably isn't worth much.
I listened to the audiobook version this time, narrated by Martin Freeman. Of course, the fact that it wasn't narrated by Stephen Fry was a huge dissapointment during the first few chapters, but, a few pages in Freeman won me over. He might not have the aristocratic air of Fry, but he had the voice-acting down to perfection. This made the story really come to life for me, more so than the voice-acting of Stephen Fry (whose "Marvin" was pretty bad to be honest). - Calificación: 5 de 5 estrellas5/5

Perfect sequel to the first book. Hits the ground running. With the characters established, this book is where the series really gets rolling. Absolutely hilarious and strangely insightful. Has me reaching for the third book right away. - Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5

The second entry in the longest trilogy ever is funnier than the first entry, which isn't surprising. What is, however, is the almost total absence of a plot.
The characters just seem to be tossed into situations for Adams to wring the maximum amount of humour out of.
Funny how I've never noticed this in any of the previous reads (this one makes either the third or fourth time I've read the series). It's somewhat disappointing.
Let's see how we get on with the third in the series. - Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5

The last time I read this book was back in 2010 which was before I started writing reviews. As this is my first reread since, it's time to correct that. The Restaurant at the End of the Universe picks up right where the first book ends, with our group of misfit characters on their way to the most famous restaurant. We're dropped right into the middle of some action as our dont-want-to-be heroes are attempting to survive being attacked.
This one feels like a more cohesive story even as the plot meanders around. The asides and snippets from the Guide are hilarious. Yet again, this book is quite quotable. Some of my favorites:
"Reality is frequently inaccurate."
"To summarize the summary of the summary: people are a problem."
"The History of every major Galactic Civilization tends to pass through three distinct and recognizable phases, those of Survival, Inquiry and Sophistication, otherwise known as the How, Why, and Where phases. For instance, the first phase is characterized by the question 'How can we eat?' the second by the question 'Why do we eat?' and the third by the question 'Where shall we have lunch?"
Just as fun and irreverent as the first book though missing some of the newness factor. This book also has the best use of a seance I've ever read. Nothing like call up dearly departed great grandad to ask for advice in the middle of a battle! - Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5

Entertaining, but the ridiculousness doesn't quite match the first book.

The first book in the series was amusing and I had this one still laying around waiting to be returned to the library so I picked it up to continue the story. I can't even write an accurate summary because I'm not really sure what the plot was in this book. After seeing there's 6 bboks in this series, I will not be reading any more of them. - Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe follows the adventures of Zaphod Beeblebrox, Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Trillian, Marvin after Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy ends. This book is still witty and fun sci-fi, but not quite as good as Hitchhikers was. - Calificación: 3 de 5 estrellas3/5

I love this story. I think it's probably the best in the series. Totally crazy. I've always wondered just how much acid Adams dropped to come up with this sort of stuff. Not nearly as much as Philip K Dick, but still, must have been an impressive amount. LOL! No, I'm not serious, but if you want to know what it's like at the End of the Universe, this will answer your questions. Recommended! - Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5

Not quite as good as the first book but perhaps that is partly due to expectations. By that I mean that when I read the first book, even though I had heard that it was hilarious, its humor was unexpected, but in this sequel, it was expected. I read this years ago but had forgotten many of the details (though surprisingly I remembered the B ship immediately).
Martin Freeman did a good narration, though his voice for Zaphod Beeblebrox didn't fit my imagined one. - Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5

I never read any of this author's work although I heard a lot of rave reviews of Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy and when I was wandering in a library in Kansas City nearly 18 years ago, I saw that they had the sequel (but not the first) and the peculiar cover art intrigued me to rent the book and give it a shot even though I never read the first.
Now, I cannot recall every nuance because I read it a very long time ago, but I do know that even though I never read the first, the book can pretty much stand on its own, I didn't have too much of a hard time getting into the action and it was making me laugh with its strange sense of homor throught the entire book.
Will a Sci-Fi spoof comedy book make everyone else laugh? I don't know. I tried to explain the plot of this book to a former coworker who was nervously nodding in agreement with me. I think she thought I was nutty and probably own too many cats.
Have I read the first book? To this very day, I must admit I should have but the series isn't popular in the country where I live in and I'm unsure if an ebook exists of the rest of the series. I would give them a try though! - Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5

I found it harder to get into this book than THGttG, but once I finally got involved, it was funny. It's typical Adams humor, and at times you find yourself numb to it, but still there are quite a few laugh out loud moments in this book. Adams is witty as hell and I'm looking forward to Book 3. Especially since they think 6x9=42. - Calificación: 4 de 5 estrellas4/5

I think I would have loved this if I'd read it immediately after the first book in the series, but as it was, I had something of a hard time re-engaging with the characters, and could have used a bit more description or reminders from the first book. By about midway through the book, I found myself really enjoying it.... but it had taken me a while to get to that point.
I'd certainly recommend this to readers who enjoyed the first in the series, but with the caveat that it's best read soon after the first.
