[edit]varen
Dutch
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]From Middle Dutch vāren (“to go, travel”), from Old Dutch faran, from Proto-West Germanic *faran, from Proto-Germanic *faraną. The restriction to “travel by water” comes (expectably) from the western dialects; the more general sense survives in the east, but is no longer part of standard Dutch.
Pronunciation
[edit]Verb
[edit]varen
- to sail, to go by boat, to navigate
- to ascend or descend
- to fare
- (archaic or dialectal, eastern) to travel over land, to go by bike, car, train etc.
Conjugation
[edit]According to the official "Groene Boekje" (the legal spelling standard for Dutch), the past tense for most senses is strong. Only the sense “to fare” has a weak past tense form.
(most senses): Strong conjugation.
