[edit]From Old Norse tapa (“to lose”), cognate with Norwegian Bokmål tape and Swedish tappa. Possibly from Proto-Germanic *tapōną, *tappōną, from Proto-Indo-European *deh₂p (“to sacrifice, lose”), cf. Latin damnum (“loss”) = Old Norse tafn (“sacrificial meat”).
