[edit]From Proto-Finnic *salmi, from Proto-Finno-Permic *śolma. Cognates include Northern Sami čoalbmi (“narrow in lake”),[1] Skolt Sami čuäʹlmm (“sound, narrows”)[2] and possibly Udmurt сюм (śum, “bay, cove”).[3] Finnish dialectal jolma is a Saami loan.[4]
