[edit]From Proto-Finnic *rauta, borrowed from either Proto-Germanic *raudą (compare Old Norse rauði (“hematite”)) or Proto-Balto-Slavic [Term?] (compare Latvian rūda (“ore”)), but in either case ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rewdʰ- (“red”).
