Etymology

From rams +‎ løg (leek, onion), borrowed from Middle Low German ramese (ramson), from Old Saxon *hramuso, from Proto-West Germanic *hramusō.

Cognate with Norwegian Nynorsk ramslauk and Swedish ramslök. Cognates amoung non-Scandinavian languages are Lithuanian kermùšė (and šermukšnis), Russian черемша (čeremša) (and черёмуха (čerjómuxa)), Czech střemcha, Slovene čemaž, Serbo-Croatian сремуш, Ancient Greek κρόμμυον (krómmuon) and Irish creamh.
