[edit]From English funk (“foul or unpleasant smell; funk music”), via dialectal French funquer, funquier (“to smoke, reek”), from Vulgar Latin fūmicāre, an alteration of Latin fūmigāre (“to smoke, fumigate”), from fūmus (“smoke”). Doublet of fumo.
