From Ottoman Turkish موره (Mora), from Byzantine Greek Μορέας (Moréas) and Μωριάς (Mōriás), from μορέα (moréa, mulberry) either from its presence in the area or from a supposed resemblance of the shape of the Peloponnese to its leaves, used in sericulture.
