[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as aladna in 828. Etymology unclear. Likely derived from a phytonym (compare Old Norse alað (“food”), aldin (“edible fruit”), Old Swedish alda (“fruit-bearing oak”)). A proposed derivation from a hydronym derived from Proto-Indo-European *alat- (“shining, bending outward”) is far-fetched. Not etymologically related to aal (“poplar, Populus”). Potentially related to Aalden.
