From Persian زمرد (zomorrod), from earlier ازمرد (ozmorod), from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾwzmbwlt /⁠uzumburd⁠/), from Ancient Greek σμάραγδος (smáragdos). Doublet of زَبَرْجَد (zabarjad).
