Etymology

Originally only ‘spherical object’, thought to be borrowed through Vulgar Latin from Latin coccum (scarlet berry, gall).[1]. However, due to strong semantical parallels and on geographic grounds, it is perhaps more likely to be derived directly from Ancient Greek κόκκος (kókkos, grain, seed, berry). Compare koqe.
