Hi, thanks for the message i am trying to find the evidence about the Aquitania design, i think it is mentioned in one of the former Cunard commodore autobiographies (possibly Harry Grattidge) - when i find it i will let you know!

Kickermaru

[edit]

Hi. Do you know the name of the maritime site that listed the Kichemaru shipwreck [1]? If you know the site name or domain, it might be possible to recover the info as someone might have archived it or it might be on archive.org. Ha! (talk) 04:22, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, I've created an article on the SS Dakota that you mentioned in the AfD. Ha! (talk) 00:17, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
see reply to User_talk:Koplimek#Kickermaru. Ha! (talk) 14:20, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I liked the link to the image [2] of the Dakota that you added (then removed) from the Project Gutenberg site. If it's from Project Gutenberg, isn't it very likely to copyright free and so able to be added to the article directly (like in an info box). Do you know what book it came from on Project Gutenberg. There's also an image here [3], although that one says it was scanned in 1999 and you need to pay for copies of it so it can't be used. I think the source they come from will be public though, so it's just a case of finding a copy that someone scanned or photographed and didn't copyright.

++ I found a whole bunch more links by searching for Steamship Dakota instead of SS Dakota (why I didn't think of that before I don't know). There should be a fair bit to build the article up

I was also thinking that a page should be opened up on Dakota's identical sister ship "Minnesota" who saw a longer service life up to 1923. Minnesota was also called "Troy" during her World War One service.Koplimek (talk) 17:07, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yea, good idea - go for it. If I find anything I'll it your way. If you need a hand creating the article I'll be glad to help. Ha! (talk) 22:13, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Since no one signed I'll assume it's Ha. I removed the Gutenberg photo (I liked it too) cause there was copyright problems even though there shouldn't be since the photo is from 1907 and way before the 1923 cutoff year for copyrighted pictures. I found the sharper Dakota photo on Google Images by typing in "Dakota Steamship" just like you were doing. I agree 'SS Dakota" doesn't always work. Sometimes you get different results by typing "S.S. Dakota". i didn't think there'd be a problem with just 'linking' the photo as opposed to uploadingit onto Wikipedia without permission. Thankfully the photo exists in a number of versions in contrasty to sharp versions. Koplimek (talk) 17:28, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As you say, it's OK to add a link to it, as long as it's not displayed as a photo in the article it can't break any copyright. I've seen a couple of different images (maybe some of them were just flipped around or mirror images actually) of the Dakota sinking on postcards, there seem to be a few of them around. Ha! I've started a discussion here. (Actually, it's a restart of a prior discussion that went cold; you can just scroll directly down to my most recent post in that section if you want.) Can you offer your thoughts? It's very important. Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 00:40, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, yes, but that's not what the discussion in that section is about. It's about whether list-type articles should have sources cited in them just as any other article. Can you read my last post at the bottom of it and give your opinion there? I'd really appreciate it. Nightscream (talk) 00:46, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, your addition of one or more external links to the page Zeffie Tilbury has been reverted.
Your edit here was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove links which are discouraged per our external links guideline from Wikipedia. The external link you added or changed is on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia. I removed the following link(s): http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=b (matching the regex rule \bmyspace\.com). If the external link you inserted or changed was to a blog, forum, free web hosting service, or similar site, then please check the information on the external site thoroughly. Note that such sites should probably not be linked to if they contain information that is in violation of the creator's copyright (see Linking to copyrighted works), or they are not written by a recognised, reliable source. Linking to sites that you are involved with is also strongly discouraged (see conflict of interest).
If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. However, if the link does not comply with our policies and guidelines, but your edit included other, constructive, changes to the article, feel free to make those changes again without re-adding the link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. Thanks for identifying that the Fool's Paradise image was not Theodore Kosloff-- that still never really looked like Kosloff to me, but I couldn't say who it was. Glad to see that someone could step in and make a positive identification. Avram (talk) 07:35, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article The Devil's Pass Key (1920 film) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Appears to fail WP:NFILM.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Stifle (talk) 12:38, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. 6 march 2009 you edited the lusitania article and added a detail about ships sunk by U20 before lusitania, here [4]. Ive just been reading Beesly, Room 40, p 102 where he observes that U 20 sank a three masted schooner clalled 'the earl ot lathom'. i was wondering therefore about the discrepancy and where your list of names comes from? Sandpiper (talk) 22:05, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Now all I have to worry about is whether its Lathom (as Beesly has it) or lataham as it also appears elsewhere. Sandpiper (talk) 21:18, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome. We're quite appreciative that you have chosen to write an article for Wikipedia, but there are a few concerns in White Gold (1927 film) that you might consider addressing. For film articles, it's not enough to show that the film simply exists. It is always best to show through references that the subject has received critical review and/or coverage in multiple sources in order to meet notability criteria for films. First and foremost is proper sourcing for the article, as Wikipedia requires that information in articles be cited back to reliable sources (not blogs, not facebook, not twitter, not myspace, not IMDB). Please consider visiting my essay on films to see how to gauge if your article meets inclusion criteria. And always feel free to ask for input or advice from editors at WikiProject Films on the project's talk page. Best regards, Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 05:53, 22 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Koplimek. I saw the The Incorrigible Dukane article while I was patrolling new pages, If you can increase the article length to 1500 characters of prose (so not including the references or infobox) then it would make a good WP:DYK candidate as the oldest surviving John Barrymore film. It would need a better reference than ImDb mind... Dylanfromthenorth (talk) 10:55, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Legagneux

[edit]

You recently mentioned diff that Legagneux committed suicide, rather than having died in an accident. Do you have a reliable source for this? In Popular Mechanics Feb. 1915 on page 195 his name is listed as a aviation-related death on 6 July 1914. Are you saying that he committd suicide by deliberately crashing his aircraft? If you have a reliable source stating that this is the case, it would be very interesting, since I have been unable to confirm this via online sources. Thanks. --TraceyR (talk) 10:39, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the link, which states "... il se tue à Saumur en tombant dans la Loire en essayant un avion, victime de sa passion."
My knowledge of French regrettably leaves a lot to be desired, but my understanding of this sentence is that "he died at Saumur when he crashed into the Loire while testing an aeroplane, a victim of his passion" (i.e. for flying). I came across this reply to a question about whether "se tuer" implies suicide:
Re: "se tuer" vs "se suicider"
In English there is usually no difference between to commit suicide and to kill one's self
He killed himself by taking poison.
se tuer - accidentally kill one's self
"Il s'est tué en voiture" would mean "He was killed in a car accident".
Based on this, and the fact that no other source mentions suicide, I don't think that we can claim that Legagneux commited suicide. --TraceyR (talk) 00:46, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I'd had some in the works and your refs did help. I just thought he was a fascinating character. If I find anymore, I'll put it on the page. The picture of Bellew in a dress [6] is real as far as I know (even though Bain News Service can be somewhat unreliable). I think it was for his role in 1902's "School for Scandal" or 1910's "The Scandal" where he had to dress in drag briefly, but he sure looks good for a 60-year-old man! The later play was a critical flop, but must have been somewhat entertaining. I also nominated the article for DYK. Froggerlaura (talk) 15:47, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Film director categories

[edit]

Well, for what it's worth, I created the category because it was already sitting as a redlink on seven or eight film articles (which isn't supposed to happen, as categories aren't supposed to be added to articles until they actually exist, but I digress). For what it's worth, any filmmaker who's directed a reasonable number of films that have Wikipedia articles of their own is allowed to have a comparable category, so there's no reason why you couldn't create one for Chautard as well — but for Chester Franklin, I'd suggest concentrating on an actual article about him before worrying about whether there's a dedicated category for his films or not. Fun times...

[edit]

All but one. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 04:27, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bloggers in the outside world are not nearly as concerned with copyright and attribution as we are at Wikipedia. For The Isle of Lost Ships (1923 film) someone had made a collage of multiple images. And while the collage assemblage itself might be the intellectual property of the blogger, the included original poster from Associated First National is not. So I used an online tool to remove the unattributed-by-blogger image and present it as the single poster intended, shared by, and properly attributed to Associated First National. And while happy you solved the Flickr problem, look at the cautions on THIS page. Certainly the Flicker user could not assert a copyright on someone else's work, but that does not prevent them from tagging images uploaded there with a "all rights reserved" tag and locking it from download. It would seem that Flicker does not investigate misuse of such tags. I felt it better to avoid that can of worms.

And as you are so proactive in preserving early cinematic history, might you consider being a coordinator for WikiProject Films? We need more editors who have a grasp of the importance of preserving film heritage. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 18:38, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Single Wives requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Please do not add links to this website to the "See also" section of article, since this section is only for links to other Wikipedia articles. The proper place for them to go is in the "External links" section, and I would appreciate your moving the ones you've already posted.

It's also possible that your link may not be acceptable under our external links policy, but I'm not going to pass judgment on that. You should just be aware that another editor may decide that your links are spam and remove them entirely because of that. Best, Beyond My Ken (talk) 02:09, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article request

[edit]

Hello Koplimek. First I want to compliment you on the huge amount of work that you have done adding and editing silent film articles here at WikiP. My request regards this article The White Flower. There is an external link for a foreign film poster that uses the title Havaii Girls but there is no mention of this alternate title in the article. I am wondering if you can add a bit of info about this with a proper source. If not no worries I will just leave things as they are but I thought that with your excellent research skills you might be able to enhance the article. Thanks for your time and thanks again for all your efforts here. Cheers. MarnetteD | Talk 21:23, 27 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply. I guessed that the poster was for TWF but that there was some quirk to the translation. I think that you have figured things out. My only concern was that another editor might remove the link since there was no info about this alternate title in the body of the article. On the other hand that might never happen. Thanks again for taking the time to reply to my request. MarnetteD | Talk 01:28, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your comment. Her birth year came from the 1949 John Adams Comstock genealogy book. I've also seen 1868 listed as her year of birth as well as 1873. Unfortunately I no longer have access to certain records that could help point to the correct year. As to Adele Ritchie I was not aware of a previous article.John F. Blériot

[edit]

Hi. Just seen your addition to this page, and I have some concerns. It's interesting material certainly, but I'm not sure that so much detail is necessary in an article which is a biography of Blériot: possibly it could be added in this detail to Daily Mail aviation prizes, and also to the article on the Wright Brothers. I also have concerns about its accuracy: for instance there's a 3 Nov 1908 letter from Wilbur to Orville in which he talks of the prize, saying that winning it would "practically end the necessity for further demonstations next year", so the £1000 cannot really be called 'paltry'. I also don't think it's very well integrated into the article: it leaves the para about the Channel having been crossed by balloon as a non-sequiter. Imo the topic would be best integrated into the para about his rivals for the crossing. TheLongTone (talk) 22:45, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, thought I'd left a not saying I'd done that edit...glad you approve & thanks for clearing up some of my (typically) sloppy editing. Melbourne MacDowell and South River, New Jersey

[edit]

Regarding Melbourne MacDowell and South River, New Jersey, there seems to be no source associating him with South River, either in his article or in the article for South River, and a source is required in both places. Do you have any source to support the claim that Little Washington became South River, and can that source be added, as well? When you add the source for McDowell in the South River article, can I ask you to put the entry in alphabetical order? Alansohn (talk) 00:45, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for reordering by alpha. Can you add a source for McDowell to the South River article? The Strang source would be appropriate, and it would be even more useful if you had a version of the source that was available online, perhaps through Google Books. I do see versions of the book online, but perhaps you know of an online accessible version of the specific 1899 version. Thanks again. Alansohn (talk) 01:46, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • WP:LISTPEOPLE specifies that notables included in articles, like the one for South River, are to have reliable and verifiable sources establishing a connection between the person and the place. I'd always prefer a source that can be confirmed by clicking a link, rather than by searching in an archive for a book more than 100 years old and long out of print, but the one thing that's needed is a reliable and verifiable source. The source should be added as soon as possible, otherwise WP:LISTPEOPLE specifies that the entry should be removed. Alansohn (talk) 03:21, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re: On Record

[edit]

Hi. We've gone through this before. If a film is lost, a reliable source should say so. If the only source you can find says the status is unknown, that's not lost and it should not be categorized as such. I asked this on the film Wikiproject and was told the exact same thing. If you want to seek a new consensus about it or bring the topic back up on the Wikiproject page, feel free to do so and I'll even add my two cents again but I don't think saying "it's well known that the film is lost" is how we should go about categorizing films. Film articles are held to the same standards as other articles and I'm sure I can't go to any page here, add some content I think I know to be true without a source and expect others to take my word. I know sources exist that support this kind of information because I've found them myself for numerous articles. Pinkadelica 19:14, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think I understand your last message. It's not semantics to say a film is lost. Lost means just that - its whereabouts are unknown. I wouldn't say a lost person is dead just because I don't know where the person is. I can presume they're dead after a reasonable amount of absence but I cannot definitively say the person is gone forever unless there is proof. As I said above, I asked the community and was told we don't say a film is lost unless a reliable source says so. That's pretty clear to me but if you want to debate this, let's open it back up the community because it seems like you think this is my personal opinion and I'm pulling this "rule" out of the air for kicks. I'm not trying to give you a hard time about this but we obviously don't see eye to eye and some sort of common ground needs to be reached before this goes forward. Film infobox

[edit]

Hello Koplimek! I have to commend you on all of the article creation you have been doing. A very impressive line of work! I just have a question for you. Where are you getting the {{Infobox film}} parameters from? It looks like you may be using an old template, since we now use "name" in place of "title" and "image size" in place of "imagesize". Not a huge concern but it is causing some funky things to happen, like The White Sister (1915 film) has the disambiguator in the infobox when it shouldn't. I would also point you to the use of the "screenplay", "story" and "based on" parameters. We have moved towards using these more specific parameters when in the past we would use parenthetical modifiers in the "writer" parameter. Let me know if you have questions. Re: film posters

[edit]

Sorry this is sort of late. Had to be out of town for a bit without laptop and internet access. Still have some RL things going on but will try to get up to speed again soon. When it comes to determining if the poster is post-1923 public domain, it depends on either the film company didn't mark their posters as copyrighted, or in the case of the poster having a copyright, that the film was not renewed by the movie company.

We have quite a few posters here which are licensed as non-free; when I'm able to find a large enough copy that hasn't been cropped so I can see if there are really any copyright marks or not, I'll change the license and upload a larger copy of the poster. If you're interested, there are some films whose posters do have copyright marks but when you get hold of a large enough copy of the lobby cards for the film, the movie company didn't copyright the lobby cards. ;) When Subway Sadie was at FA review, it had a very small copy of the film's poster. I couldn't find anything large enough to prove that the poster didn't have a copyright mark, but a very nice, large lobby card for the lost film did surface and it's what you see in the infobox there. :) I keep looking and either change licenses when I can or if I find something we don't have and it's not marked, I upload the poster or lobby card. We hope (talk) 22:36, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Dearie

[edit]

Glad you like it-thought it turned out very nicely too. Here's where I found the poster and it's very easy to get lost in just looking here as there's so many posters, card and stills. Am trying to work my way through it and upload what we don't have that's PD, but need to also keep up with what's around in the non-silents, television shows, music and trains. What a mixture! :)

Was recently working on Don Terry with Dr. B. An old film magazine told about how he was a tourist discovered in the old Café Montmartre at lunch, hoping to see some movie stars. The way he got into films was amazing, but somehow I wandered over to his Find-A-Grave page and started reading a bio of his wife. She was a daughter of the founder of Star-Kist Tuna. He reverted to his birth name and went to work for the tuna company after he came home from WWII. They were philanthropists who gave over $30 million to USC alone over time. Can you imagine--being discovered as he was and then being so well-off through his marriage? I was stunned, because so often you read stories like this and there are no reliable sources--this one has them. I'd been hoping to get the Dearie poster up (without all the wrinkles) for the holidays and am glad we can all enjoy it and them! We hope (talk) 01:46, 12 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

What a pleasant surprise, to receive a Barnstar for an article long done. Once upon a time, I had pretensions of taking Berthold to FA status, but tired of the inanities of the assessment process, and moved on.

I was moved by the sheer blind patriotic courage with which he persevered. I also enjoyed ruining that old myth about him being strangled to death with his Blue Max's ribbon.

Georgejdorner (talk) 17:30, 16 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, if you have the patient knack of dealing with assessment, this article could probably reach FA status with no substantive changes. Certainly, it is under-rated at B Class. Info in it comes from the most recent sources.Georgejdorner (talk) 20:09, 18 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

J. Gordon Edwards and The Queen of Sheba

[edit]

I noticed that you've been pretty active on silent film articles (including creation / development of some of the J. Gordon Edwards stuff that's long lingered on my to-do list). I finally pushed a J. Gordon Edwards filmography live, and by and large I'm extremely happy with the work I've done there, but I have lingering concerns over the Edwards scenerist credit for The Queen of Sheba. I've explained the situation more thoroughly at the article talk page. I'd value your input on the issue (along with anything else you'd like to point out about the filmography in general). It'd be nice to get stuff settled here, before I start moving down the list of the remaining Edwards films and then pushing for my ultimate goal of GA icons for the entire body of his work. Hello! Thank you for all the work you've done, in adding articles about silent films to Wikipedia. However, when adding new articles, could you please include a relevant stub tag, and/or the {{WikiProject Film}} banner on the talk page? This will help the article be included in the appropriate categories and task forces. Also, please consider joining the Silent films task force, where you can collaborate with others interested in improving silent films, and find out about updates. We'd love to have you! Re: Dearie book

[edit]

I clicked a link while I was at your Amazon link and see there are quite a few offers to sell copies as very reasonable prices. The best bet looks like the "Like New" for $4.99 & shipping. Until McFarland made the generous offer to donate books, I'd looked at prices for the Perry Como biography, which is out of print. Some people with copies were asking $50 and up for them on eBay and the like-Wow! :-) We hope (talk) 18:17, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding your removal of the advert for Down Home (1920) from the James O. Barrows article as a mis-identification in the advert: I rechecked the source for the image, page 10 of the Jan. 8, 1921 Duluth Herald, and it lists James O. Barrows in the image caption. Although I disagree with the edit, since I cannot verify the accuracy of the identification as Barrows, I will not challenge your good faith edit. Re: posters

[edit]

I'll get going on these ASAP. Can tell you now that the Scarlet Seas choice #1 is a large enough scan for me to see that there are no copyright marks, so that's easily PD. The PD or not question from 1923 on is whether you can find a full copy (borders not trimmed as this is usually where any copyright marks are found) to determine that they didn't copyright the poster or card.

We have posters and lobby cards for many films which have had their copyrights renewed, but when the posters or lobby cards were originally printed, they were not copyright marked, so they're in the public domain. The next step for me with a small or trimmed card or poster is to see if copyrights for the film and its materials were renewed. If that's the case, it can be licensed as copyright not renewed. Will also try to see if some larger copies of some of these can be found; even if they're not in such good shape, if they're large enough and have the borders, they can tell us if it's PD or not.  :) We hope (talk) 20:32, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Re: lobby art

[edit]

My only rules are: if we can find 'em and in the case of those from 1923 onward, if they're large enough so I can read the fine print at the bottom (this is where the copyright information, if any, would normally be). Will get started on your list ASAP. ;) We hope (talk) 21:55, 2 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have a couple more yet to do and would like to explain why I did some substituting. When the images were small, I tried finding larger ones, to see if any were not copyright marked. While I was looking, other posters and lobby cards for the films turned up which were large enough for me to tell they had no copyright marks. So we needed to go with the ones clearly not marked as copyrighted. I'll probably have some "extras" (lobby cards) for some of these in the near future. We hope (talk) 02:16, 9 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Re: posters

[edit]

Thanks much for your kind words! I think we're now caught up on all the posters. I used the French poster for The Barrier because it might be a bit confusing to people to see a book cover there for a film. Tried locating a US poster for that and The Next Corner, but no luck as yet. Did get a lobby card for The Hottentot, though :) Can't believe that summer's coming to an end soon-a friend told me her daughter goes back to school on the 11th of this month, so it must be. Peace and happy editing to you too! We hope (talk) 19:41, 8 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What I got was an ad for the film from an old copy of Motion Picture Daily. ;) If you spend a little time here at Lantern, you'll see a lot of old film magazines and and the like. Many of the copies of older magazines have come from the Library of Congress. The publishers had to deposit a copy when filing for original copyright protection. Film images

[edit]

I'm doing images and some work with articles (fixing dead links, updating where needed), but not writing content as before. Every time I'd try doing something like that, another "box war" would start up somewhere in FAs and GAs. I stopped here. There's more which could be done with it; just don't feel like doing that or more work on other articles I've worked on unless it's to maintain them. Also got tired of the behavior of an editor.

About James Durkin, my reading shows he had 3 wives. There was one before Maude Fealy. The marriage broke up because of a romance between Durkin and his leading lady, Frances Starr. Copies of this story made news throughout the US. I'm trying to get more archived right now so it's not lost, but will start on your list and add more news clippings to Durkin as soon as I can. Your recent editing history at Kate Mulgrew shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See BRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. Let me get to the end of this page so I know where I stopped. The person uploaded a lot of posters, many of them from Republic. Posters

[edit]

I'm not going to be working here because of the infobox issues, but will upload PD posters at Commons and will post links here. We hope (talk) 11:20, 3 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I can understand how you must feel after losing all of that! It's like losing a friend, and in a sense it is, because you worked with the material for a long time.
What I'm not doing any more is editing articles. Fine with me to edit files and so on. If I do, decide not to have an infobox and take the article to GA or FA, then there's the chance that the hue and cry over not having one starts. It inflames tempers on both side of the issue and wastes a tremendous amount of time as well as the arguments go on and on; some are even regularly "recycled" on many articles. I'm tired of having my time wasted in this way, so if I don't expand it, send it for GA or FA, I've won the personal battle of not wasting time. WP may be the poorer for it, but until there are some hard and fast rules about bothering editors about the infoboxes which aren't required, that's it for me re: editing articles.
Many of those saying they want boxes are also pushing (some profusely) for text content creation/expansion, but one can't do both at the same time. The time spent talking boxes is time that can't be put into creation/expansion. If you do both-talk boxes at one article and create/expand another, the box issue may start all over-at the newer article, and the conundrum continues.
I can upload Betty in Search of a Thrill here at WP with a PD-1923-abroad license; PD in the US but perhaps not other places. Those with watermarks can be uploaded here and sent to Graphics for work, then moved after work is done. The Lillie Langtry one is easy. CardCow keeps an archive of sold and unsold cards on their website.
Am also trying to reorganize the images I have archived and start uploading more of them. There are hundreds-enough to make any older film buff happier than happy! :) Here's 3 I recently uploaded: We hope (talk) 14:23, 5 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think the Elvis article really needs to be split with some of it being spun off into separate articles; know I had to cover a lot of ground with Skelton because he was a performer for 70 years before retiring. (Went into the business as a young boy.) When we worked on the Waldorf-Astoria hotel article, there was so much material. It wound up with 2 separate articles-the original hotel from beginning to 1933 and the present hotel from 1933 onward. There's enough material on many of the key figures like George Boldt and Oscar Tschirky that we could easily expand their articles. John Warne Gates was one we did expand and take to GA.
I have some State Street Sadie cards "on hold" and will get them uploaded for you. Are you most interested in the "lost" films? Took a look through a poster sales site the other day and found a lot of material you just can't find elsewhere, particularly on the "lost" films. Many cards for A Harp In Hock, among others. The one bad thing about their archive is it can only be searched by title; searching otherwise means page by page and they have over 20,000 listings. I'll post my uploads here on your page and you can see if anything might have been something on your list. File:Man Who Laughs poster.jpg This just went to Commons-hang in there! :-) We hope (talk) 18:42, 5 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
OK-this one worked out. File:State Street Sadie lobby card.jpg The lobby title card, unfortunately, didn't because it's been trimmed. The copy on the border (most often on bottom border) is what we need to have to see if it's PD. I tried the next step, which was to see if the film had been renewed, and it was. I see that so many times with the lost films-they knew it was lost but renewed it anyhow. See if there's anything you were looking for here, as I uploaded quite a bit today. We hope (talk) 02:11, 6 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I archived these some time ago. The larger 2 look like they're lobby cards. They were said to be from the film but there was nothing for me to be able to officially connect them. I think we tend to forget how it was for those back in that time. If you didn't go to the event itself, there was only one way to really see it even though it was after the fact and that was via film. They had no pay per view or even closed circuit at a local theater. I found a letter from the Chicago Federation of Labor asking that the ticket price of $1 per person to view the film be lowered because they thought it was too expensive for quite a few people. Posters

[edit]

The Dempsey one is by Otis. After you look at enough of these, you get to know which ones were contracted by which companies. MGM almost always dealt with Tooker Litho in NY for posters. Some dealt with Otis, some dealt with Butts of NY and some with Morgan. There was also a Miner Co. in NY who printed film posters.

Not a lot of signed lobby cards but First National dealt with Ullman in NY for most of theirs. Others like Paramount had cards done by Wyanoak, NY. Some 1920s MGM cards were done by Lubin, NY and American Multi Color of NY. Later on, those printing the cards didn't have their names on them. We hope (talk) 17:48, 3 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I believe you are right. Since our conversation on my talk page I have checked a good few photos of him, and I think it fairly obvious that the man in the D.5 is not Dunne. I can also tell you that his granddaughter is of the same opinion. Sadly, Wikipedia requires facts to come from sources deemed reliable and the Museum is one such. I have changed the image for a different portrait photo. Thank you for pointing out this anomaly, and my apologies for giving you such a runaround. — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 12:50, 7 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Holidays
From Stave one of Dickens A Christmas Carol

Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail. Mind! I don’t mean to say that I know, of my own knowledge, what there is particularly dead about a door-nail. I might have been inclined, myself, to regard a coffin-nail as the deadest piece of ironmongery in the trade. But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my unhallowed hands shall not disturb it, or the Country’s done for. You will therefore permit me to repeat, emphatically, that Marley was as dead as a door-nail.

New Page Patrol?

[edit]

Hi Koplimek,

I've recently been looking for editors to invite to join New Page Patrol, and from your editing history, I think you would be a good candidate. Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; we could use some additional help from an experienced user like yourself.

Would you please consider becoming a New Page Reviewer? (After gaining the flag, patrolling is not mandatory. One can do it at their convenience). But kindly read the tutorial before making your decision. If you choose to apply, you can drop an application over at WP:PERM/NPR.

Cheers, and hope to see you around, — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 21:12, 23 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

List of suicides

[edit]

Hi. Thanks for working to improve the site with your edit to List of suicides. However, the edit had to be reverted, because as I'm sure you know by now, Wikipedia cannot accept uncited material, and this indeed includes list-format articles, especially List of suicides, for which we had a discussion on this point years ago. If you want to restore your addition, please do so only with the proper citation accompanying.

Also, one other thing: If you can, please observe the format in which each entry is written. They're not written in full sentences, and therefore, don't end in a period. Rather, the general description of the who the person is, followed by the method. The reason is usually not given, especially when it's depression, since that's probably the reason for most of the suicides. It's also redundant to say "self-inflicted", since well....you know. :-) Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 00:03, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Here are the two entries before and after yours, as examples:

The Eternal Mother

[edit]

Hi Koplimek, I noticed your changes to The Eternal Mother (1917 film) and The Eternal Mother (1920 film), and wanted to discuss it with you. I changed the hatnotes to '[[The Eternal Mother (disambiguation)|The Eternal Mother]]' following WP:HATNOTERULES. Including the '(disambiguation)' indicates that the link to the disambiguation page is intentional and doesn't need to be replaced with a more specific target. Personally, I prefer to simply write out the full name, 'The Eternal Mother (disambiguation)', but if the article already has the shortened version, I usually maintain that to respect the previous editor's work. The result is the same for the reader. Leschnei (talk) 12:56, 25 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Christmas!
Hello Koplimek,
Early in A Child's Christmas in Wales the young Dylan and his friend Jim Prothero witness smoke pouring from Jim's home. After the conflagration has been extinguished Dylan writes that

Nobody could have had a noisier Christmas Eve. And when the firemen turned off the hose and were standing in the wet, smoky room, Jim's Aunt, Miss. Prothero, came downstairs and peered in at them. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?"

My thanks to you for your efforts to keep the 'pedia readable in case the firemen chose one of our articles :-) Best wishes to you and yours and happy editing in 2019. MarnetteD|Talk 02:04, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi! You may already be aware of this, but the appearance and stability of your recently created articles like Robert Conville and Alexander Carr can be improved by using External link templates instead of direct urls, e.g. {{IMDb name}} and {{IBDB name}}. By simply adding the ID number, this ensures that if the URLs ever change (which is very possible), the links can still function without changing every single one. Also, Find a Grave should generally not be used as references: as a user-generated source with no editorial oversight, it is not a reliable source, and often has factual errors (wrong dates, misidentified family members, etc.). More reliable sources such as books or newspapers should be used instead. Cheers, --Animalparty! (talk) 01:16, 14 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AnimalParty, I appreciate your concern. But templating doesn't always work when the urls change or even when the urls don't change, that's why I'm always upgrading and correcting other peoples' mistakes particlarly the coding for IMDb and IBDB. Both seem to go from unsecure-http to secure-https, it's an ongoing manual job keeping wiki updated and relavent and protecting links from 404error. That's another reason for placing info/urls in External links so important material gets archived by Wayback and that seems to work really well, not always but well enough. I wish I had done that in early years at Wiki ie 2008-12. Some great material has been lost. But ordinary in-line b/w citations bypass all of that but even with that you have no way of knowing if a source link is still active or defunct without actually typing it in to search. Thanks AMBest.Koplimek (talk) 01:39, 14 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(Let's keep this conversation on one page for convenience) I see, although I don't know if I agree. While archiving links is certainly good for stability (even if the source is unreliable), the purpose of Wikipedia isn't in and of itself to generate archived links, and you can always archive URLs directly and instantly by typing them into sites like https://archive.org/web/ or http://archive.ph/ or http://archive.st/. And while I don't have a lot experience with the inner-working of templates, the logic should go that changes/corrections/ to all links governed by templates can be managed centrally, to prevent 404 errors like you say, and reduce the need for ongoing manual jobs (WP:LINKROT explicitly recommends not using bare URLs). And I don't see why going from unsecured to secure https would be a problem, it should be an improvement. --Animalparty! (talk) 02:09, 14 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
to respond to earlier post about findagrave, while some(not all contributors) don't encourage findagrave as a citation, it is not forbidden. Some findagrave entries are better than others especially on long lost players, actors, their cemeteries etc. In other words it's a place to start not to use singular without other backup sources. Templates; there have been a few people who were excellent contributors who retired from Wikipedia over the issue of templates. When I created the Alexander Carr article, there was a pink box placed on a previous draft article using the name Alexander Carr preventing an upload of any article with that name, which is why I augmented my upload to Alexander Carr (actor) to bypass the pink draft block. It has since been normalized to Alexander Carr by I think FloridaAmy. I don't archive or harvest links on Wikipedia that are not relavent, I and many other contributors use the same sources repeatedly because they adequately verify information; there's no rule against that. For instance IMDb is used in External links on almost every movie and personality in the business dead or alive(it is sometimes citated as well). This issue with IMDb came up several years ago because a few people complained it wasn't perfect. Some of the issues are petty as Wikipedia has many arbitrary rules(ie rules that are not consistent). The LINKROT WP page also actually says 'do not delete a page because the URL to the source does not work any longer'. Keep in mind WP LINKROT is a page that can be edited by anyone so it might say one thing today and another tomorrow. The https/http is a problem because it's not consistent, it's not Wikipedia's fault, some sites will work with either and like I said others won't. HATNOTES: Citation Hatnotes/Headnotes are a real chore as many contributors and or bots put these up without being made to dig up the sources. They litter many a article even when articles may be adequately source. You're kind of new, stick around, turn a few white pages into articles, gain that experience of making a page of information viable. Koplimek (talk) 03:07, 14 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Damon Runyon's short story "Dancing Dan's Christmas" is a fun read if you have the time. Right from the start it extols the virtues of the hot Tom and Jerry

This hot Tom and Jerry is an old-time drink that is once used by one and all in this country to celebrate Christmas with, and in fact it is once so popular that many people think Christmas is invented only to furnish an excuse for hot Tom and Jerry, although of course this is by no means true.

The article Dot and Jim has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non notable children’s books. WP:BEFORE shows no evidence of reliable, secondary, substantial coverage

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. The Wild Olive poster

[edit]

I am looking to use this poster for the lost film The Wild Olive now a public domain film. How do you to submit to Commons to take the watermark out. The Wild Olive poster link any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Koplimek (talk) 18:29, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I am not at all aware of a method to remove an embedded watermark, especially if you do not have the original altered graphic (I assume that by carefully using only watermarked images is how they were able to get a good price for the original poster at auction, if it is truly a one-of-a-kind poster). Only advise (which you already know): suggest asking for assistance at the Silent Films Task Force page, or perhaps at one of the graphics task forces (which I have not researched) for assistance, if it can be done using the website image than it is more likely they might know how / have the graphics programming tools to do it. I know GettyImages uses watermarks, and are able to charge what seem to me to be high prices for use of their original out of copyright images. Good luck, and best wishes on this endeavor! Pedro de Cordoba

[edit]

Hello. I just visited the article on Pedro de Cordoba and noticed that a few years ago you edited it to add "Pietro de Cordoba" as his birth name. What was your source for such information? I haven't been able to find any reference to his birthname being "Pietro" that didn't go back to the Wikipedia article. Thanks, AuH2ORepublican (talk) 22:46, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

August 12

[edit]

Hi! I reverted your edit on August 12 as any changes or additions to days of the year pages now require citations and any that aren't are being reverted, please see WP:DOYCITE. The guidelines were changed due to the high number of errors and the number of links to articles with no or little reliable sources. Any names or events added before these guidelines were implemented are currently in the process of being referenced or removed. If you'd like to find it more, please see WP:DAYS. Findagrave

[edit]

Per Template:Find a Grave#Usage guidance, WP:GRAVE#When adding information to articles and WP:External links/Perennial websites#Find a Grave, please avoid adding links to findagrave. If the pertinent information cannot be found in a reliable source, then it is sometimes useful to add a link if there is a photograph of the person's tomb but in most cases it is not useful. Thanks. What reliable sources are in Tariq Nasheed backing your edits

I see nothing in the article or anywhere else. And we don’t gibe dates of birth for BLPs without multiple reliable sources. Note that I need an answer. You don’t seem to respond here, not a good look for someone with your experience. Doug Weller talk 19:37, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't appear you respond to comments here, but in case you wanted an explanation for reverting you: I don't believe aveleyman.com is appropriate as an external link in general, and certainly not in a BLP article.
