Mispelling: as The Dell-Vikings

[edit]

The Versatiles?...

[edit]

...to become Fifth Dimension? [Aquarius/Let the sunshine in & their Cream's rendition of Sunshine of your love]. Were they the same combo? Stephan KŒNIG 23:11, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Versatiles were Kripp Johnson, Chuck Jackson, Don Jackson, Arthur Budd and Edward Everette after Mercury won the lawsuit over the usage of the name Del Vikings (no matter the spelling). This formation only existed from late 1957 to sometime in 1958, and mainly did background and overdub duties. 178.165.163.188 (talk) 15:13, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Name

[edit]

Some explanation of the various spellings of the band's name is probably called for. As far as I can determine, mainly from images of the original record labels at Discogs, releases came out as follows:

The Del Vikings
  • Whispering Bells (1957) (Fee Bee Records)
  • Too Many Miles (1963) (ABC-Paramount Records)
The Dell-Vikings
  • Come Go With Me (1957) (Dot Records)
  • Come Go With Us—EP (1957) (Dot Records)
Del Vikings
  • Cool Shake (1957) (Mercury Records)
  • Come Along With Me (1957) (Mercury Records)
  • The Voodoo Man (1958) (Mercury Records)
  • You Cheated (1958) (Mercury Records)
Del-Vikings
  • Somewhere Over The Rainbow (1957) (Luniverse Records)

Strangely enough, none of the original recordings (not a single one), give the name as we have the article titled! Skinsmoke (talk) 04:10, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There is one single recording where they are spelled that way. The B-side of "What Made Maggie Run" (FB-210) on the Fee Bee label from 1957.

Duh! Thanks for that. I had somehow managed to miss it completely! Skinsmoke (talk) 18:36, 5 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The correct spelling - One or two L ?

They are spelled with one L in three newspaper reports from late 1956. The double L variant appears on the first two Fee Bee records (205 and 210A) in early 1957, on the Dot release 15538 and in a report in Cash Box magazine (01/29/1957). In another report in the same issue they were misspelled "Bell Vikings". The strangest one is the third record FB-210C (same constellation of group members), on the A side they are spelled with double L and on the B side with one L. On the fourth record (Fee Bee 214) - Whispering Bells/Don't Be A Fool - they are spelled with one L on both sides. At the same time, DOT released the same record with the double L variant.

The year 1957
Fee Bee - 1957
1/57 FB-205 Come Go With Me/How Can I Find True Love ... both sides with double L
4/57 FB-210A What Made Maggie Run/When I Come Home ... both sides with double L
4/57 FB-210C What Made Maggie Run/Uh Uh Baby ... A-side with double L … B-Seite with one L
5/57 FB-214 Whispering Bells/Don’t Be A Fool ... both sides with one L
------ Split ------
8/57 FB-218 I’m Spinning/You Say You Love Me ... The Del Viking Kripp Johnson
11/57 FB-221 Willette/Woke Up This Morning ... The Dell Viking Kripp Johnson

Dot – 1957
1/57 15538 Come Go With Me/How Can I Find True Love ... both sides with double L
4/57 15571 What made Maggie Run/Little Billy Boy ... both sides with one L
5/57 15592 Whispering Bells/Don’t Be A Fool ... both sides with double L
------ Split ------
7/57 EP 1058 Come Go With Us ... with double L
8/57 15636 I’m Spinning/When I Come Home … A-side Kripp … B-side with double L
11/57 15673 Willette/Woke Up This Morning … no Del(l) … just Kripp Johnson

Mercury and Luniverse releases from 1957 with one L

1959 - 1973
When the contract with Mercury expired in May 1959 (Mercury had the rights to the name Del Vikings no matter what spelling, but only used the variant with one L), all re-releases (of Fee Bee Masters) could now be published under the name "Dell-Vikings". Averbach (Fee Bee) and DOT used the Dell Vikings spelling for all subsequent re-releases. (also Bim Bam Boom, Eedee and Blue Sky) From 1960 on, with the founding of "The New ... Del Vikings" (new constellation with Kripp Johnson, Clarence Quick and 4 new guys) at Alpine and 1961 at ABC, the group wrote itself with one L. All re-releases of Fee Bee Masters with double L:
Fee Bee 1959 - 1966
-/59 FB-205 Come Go With Me/How Can I Find True Love
-/59 FB-210 What Made Maggie Run/Down By The Stream
-/59 FB-218 I’m Spinning/You Say You Love Me
-/59 FB-221 Willette/I Want To Marry You
6/61 FB-205 Come Go With Me/Whispering Bells
-/62 FB-902 True Love/Baby Let Me Be
-/64 FB-205 Come Go With Me/Whispering Bells
-/66 FB-206 Maggie/Down In Bermuda
Dot 1960-1965
5/60 16092 Come Go With Me/How Can I Find True Love
6/61 16236 Come Go With Me/Whispering Bells
4/65 133 Come Go With Me/Whispering Bells
Eedee 1962
3501 It's Too Late/Understand (... actually not a Del Vikings record)
Bim Bam Boom 1972-1973
111 Cold Feet/I Want To Marry You
113 Watching The Moon/You Say You Love Me
115 I'm Spinning/Girl, Girl
Blue Sky 1973
104 Hey Seniorita/Over The Rainbow

Alpine (1960), ABC (1961-1963), Crown (1963), Gateway (1964) and Scepter (1972) with one L

Article & hyphen
Both the article "The" and the hyphen are meaningless in my opinion and just further spellings. On a South African pressing there is also a version without a gap, i.e. DELVIKINGS. The difference in spelling (one or two L) has nothing to do with the constellation of the group members and only to a limited extent with the record label. It's probably like Gus Backus said - a typo. As I suspect from Averbach's many spelling mistakes, maybe even an intentional one. Averbach had a certain affinity for alternative spellings, here are some examples:
Averbach ... Auerbach ... Averbeck
Dell Vikings ... Del Vikings ... The Del-Vikings ...
Joey Biscoe ... Joe Bisko
Kripp Johnson ... Krips Johnson
Willette .. Willete
Fee Bee ... Fe Be
Starr ... Star
What Made Maggie Run ... What Makes Maggie Run ... Maggie
How Can I Find True Love .. True Love
Uh Uh Baby ... Baby, Let Me Be

In summary, one can say that with a few early exceptions (see above), all Fee Bee Masters and thus their releases on Dot, Bim Bam Boom, Eedee and Blue Sky, as well as their re-releases, are spelled with double L. All other recordings under the record labels - Mercury, Luniverse, Alpine, ABC, Crown, Gateway and Scepter - are spelled with one L.

Huh?

[edit]

"Lerchey formed another Del Vikings group in the mid-90s shortly before his death in January 29, 2005" The mid-90s are "shortly" before 2005? Ten years!!?? 5.34.85.72 (talk) 04:55, 16 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Needs more sources; accuracy issues

[edit]

The article needs more sources, especially toward the end; there is a lot of unsourced stuff there. I have tagged it for that and for factual accuracy. Regarding accuracy, the first question I have is whether the group still exists in any form. I cannot find any indication of its existence online, but the article uses the present tense. Because I cannot find any indication that the group still exists, I have removed the infobox information on its years active (unclear) and on current and former members (also unclear). (Oddly, Norman Wright--who passed away in 2010--was listed as a current member.) If anyone knows of a source that shows that the group (or some offshoot of it) does still exist, we can re-add the information. SunCrow (talk) 21:07, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have just removed a lot of the unsourced and confusing material. I have also added some sourced material on "Come Go With Me" and "Whispering Bells." The article still needs more sources. SunCrow (talk) 18:53, 8 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
