Indian Wells is a city in Riverside County, California, in the Coachella Valley (Palm Springs area), in between Palm Desert and La Quinta. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 3,816.
It has the highest proportion of millionaires of any city in the United States.
The city hosts the Indian Wells Masters (also known by its current sponsorship name of Pacific Life Open), one of the nine tournaments in the Tennis Masters Series of high-level events operated by the Association of Tennis Professionals (i.e., the men's tennis tour). The event is held in the 16,100-seat stadium of the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.4 square miles (34.7 km²), of which, 13.2 square miles (34.3 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.4 km²) of it (1.19%) is water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 3,816 people, 1,982 households, and 1,323 families residing in the city. The population density was 288.5 people per square mile (111.4/km²). There were 3,843 housing units at an average density of 290.5/sq mi (112.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.33% White, 1.49% Asian, 0.39% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 2.96% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,982 households out of which 8.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.1% were married couples living together, 3.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.93 and the average family size was 2.28.
The age distribution is 7.6% under the age of 18, 1.5% from 18 to 24, 9.4% from 25 to 44, 35.3% from 45 to 64, and 46.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 63 years. For every 100 females there were 89.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $93,986, and the median income for a family was $119,110. Males had a median income of $88,709 versus $49,539 for females. The per capita income for the city was $76,187. About 1.2% of families and 3.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including none of those under age 18 and 2.6% of those age 65 or over.
Politics
In the state legislature Indian Wells is located in the 37th Senate District, represented by Republican Jim Battin, and in the 64th Assembly District, represented by Republican John J. Benoit. Federally, Indian Wells is located in California's 45th congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of R +3[1] and is represented by Republican Mary Bono Mack.
