Czech
editEtymology
editProbably from ne (“not”) + Old Czech *bo (cognate with Czech ba);[1] basically formed in the meaning of “if not”.[2]
Pronunciation
editConjunction
editnebo
Usage notes
editNebo is used both as an exclusive and an inclusive or.[3][4] To avoid ambiguity, "buď ... (a)nebo ..." ("either ... or ...") can be used for exclusive or; however, the conjunction buď and consequently this structure is never used in questions. Adding "nebo obojí" ("or both") etc. can be used for inclusive or.
- Dáte si kávu nebo čaj? ― Do you want coffee or tea?
- Dáte si ke snídani kávu, nebo čaj? ― What do you want for breakfast – coffee or tea?
- Měli byste si dát buď kávu, anebo čaj. ― You should have either coffee or tea.
