Etymology

edit

From German quittieren suffixed with -era, from Medieval Latin quitāre (to free from debt), from Latin quietāre (to calm). Cognate of Danish kvittere, French quitter, Italian quitare, Spanish quitar. For the shift in sense from "settle a debt" to "equalize score", compare Swedish vedergälla, English pay back, English even the score, etc.
