editFrom Ottoman Turkish خاقان (ḫāḳān)[1] (alternatively قاغان (ḳaġān)), from Old Turkic 𐰴𐰍𐰣 (qǧn¹), from Proto-Turkic *qaɣan or *xaɣan, ultimate origin is uncertain. Cognates with Mongolian ᠬᠠᠭᠠᠨ (qaɣan), Kazakh қаған (qağan), Kyrgyz каган (kagan), Southern Altai каан (kaan), Tatar каган (qağan), Uyghur قاغان (qaghan), Uzbek xoqon.
