Spread during the 20th century from Low German, Low Franconian, and Central Franconian dialects, from Middle Low German vīs and early modern Dutch vijs, respectively. Compare contemporary Dutch vies (from a dialectal form). Per Pfeifer a connection with Latin spīrō (I breathe, blow) is possible.
