editAssuming that anco represents the original form, likely a rebracketing of ancora as anc'ora.[1][2] A borrowing from Old Occitan ancui (“on this day”) has also been suggested,[3] but this would explain neither the stress position of anche, nor the lack of a final -ui (an acceptable ending in Italian; cf. lui).
