From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-br(w)a(ŋ/k) (“to speak”); cognate with Tibetan སྨྲ (smra, “to say, utter”) (STEDT), as well as perhaps Old Chinese 譒 (OC *paːls, “to promulgate”).[1]
