English: Life cycle of reovirus. Cell attachment is mediated through (1a) sialic acid binding, (1b) JAM-A association, and (1c) integrin binding; (2) Reovirus is internalized through endocytosis. Within late endosomes/lysosomes; (3) uncoating proceeds through (3a) proteolytic-mediated removal of σ3, (3b) cleavage of µ1 to δ, and (3c) loss of σ1 concomitant with membrane penetration and transition to cores; (4) Viral +sense RNAs are transcribed and released by cytoplasmic core particles; (5) Reovirus proteins are expressed and (6) assemble with +sense RNAs into progeny core particles; (7) Genomic dsRNA is synthesized within progeny cores, which serve to amplify reovirus macromolecular synthesis; (8) Reovirus is fully assembled through addition of outer-capsid proteins and released from cells by lysis and/or apoptosis.
