This has raised a host of fundamental, but puzzling questions, like: what should be digital media’s basic stance towards government? What are the responsibilities of OTT towards government and vice versa? Where is the source of such responsibilities? Why shouldn’t government be a watchdog on the digital media? Why should the digital media be left free for giving creative freedom? Is creative freedom absolute? Whether self-regulation is better than governmental regulation?
People are divided as always they have been and will be. Many reverberate in their view George Washington, “Government is not reason. It is not eloquence. It is a force, like fire: a dangerous servant and a terrible master.” At the same time there are others who firmly believe government is to be viewed as a benevolent agent - a collective mechanism for the good of all. While the former oppose any regulation of OTT , the latter ones feel regulation is a necessity for multiple reasons.
It is very tempting to try for the best of both worlds - give creative freedom to digital media and at the same time limit its possible damaging effects on the individuals and society. Finding this synthesis might be a million dollars question...
