The article describes the development and properties of an aggregate scale that characterizes an ... more The article describes the development and properties of an aggregate scale that characterizes an offensive, proactive strategy for coping with one's own aging and old age. Data were obtained from an anonymous online survey of 1,692 Czech older adults aged 65-84 in June 2021. The offensive strategy scale shows sufficient internal consistency and acceptable validity and reliability. Those with a purely offensive strategy are more likely to be young-old people, still employed, with a higher vocational school or university degree, primarily from large cities, with previously predominantly mental work and with a greater range of activities including household activities. The results are consistent with selected items of the M. P. Lawton´s well-being questionnaire (PGCM) and with the WHO emotional well-being index. The aim of this article is to point to other than the cognitive effects of older adults’ learning... more The aim of this article is to point to other than the cognitive effects of older adults’ learning that is organized in courses. The number of older people in the Czech Republic grows, and this is accommodated by universities as well as by other institutions. Nonetheless, only few representative surveys are devoted to the education of older adults, and the literature places little emphasis on satisfactory and stimulating effects of participation in organized learning. In fact, education of older adults, in general, does not only expand their knowledge and skills; it also influences their mental health (supporting mental hygiene), social status and quality of life. Among those effects, the satisfaction of important psychogenic and sociogenic needs has a special position and value. The analysis of the educational provision of 22 Czech universities of the third age indicates that courses primarily focus on helping older people how to “spend their time”, realize their hobbies and satisfy...

The goal of the paper is to identify the message in letters written by Polish and Czech seniors. ... more The goal of the paper is to identify the message in letters written by Polish and Czech seniors. The letters were subject to qualitative analysis. The method used was the analysis of the inspired texts-letters written by older people to the younger generation, which may become a didactic tool for the younger generations to learn from the biographies of seniors. The result of the analysis is a list of categories reflecting the main aspects dominating in the letters. These categories are: message addressed to a younger generation, important events and people in individual life story, reflection upon the meaning of life and concerns and challenges in the course of life. All the seniors express their affirmation of family, share ethical reflections on their relationships with other people and on passing. Thus, the main message of the letters is a call to cherish family relationships, nurture relations with other people and show respect to others.

In fact, education of older adults in general does not only expand their knowledge and skills; it also influences their mental health (supporting mental hygiene), social status and quality of life. Among those effects, satisfaction of important psychogenic and sociogenic needs has a special position and value. An analysis of the educational provision of 22 Czech universities of the third age indicates that courses primarily focus to help older people how to "spend their time", realize their hobbies and satisfy their curiosity. Themes of public interest, like media literacy or first aid, are quite missing. On the contrary, courses organized by other institutions (like academies of the third age, older people's clubs, community centres etc.) are more centred upon the practical needs of older people. The motivations of older adults for organized learning are dominated by needs and related interests. The most important needs are those from the categories of belonging, esteem and self-esteem, and self-actualization and understanding (in terms of A. H. Maslow's theory). Learning and self-learning of older adults is a part of the active ageing policy proposed by the World Health Organisation in 2002. It is based on the theory of active ageing which builds on the assumption that an adult person's needs continue to exist till old age though they partly change. These include, among others, the inclinations to activity, self-fulfilment, self-esteem (to reaching a sense of competence and usefulness). Educational activities contribute to feelings of dignity, self-esteem and well-being and help consolidate mental and physical health by mobilizing intellectual, cognitive and motoric capacities and functions. Therefore, organized learning is not only a matter of a growth of knowledge and skills but also a matter of social ties and their cultivation. Simultaneously, organized learning both satisfies individual needs and interests of older people and stimulates the attainment of their life values.

Škála ofenzivní strategie českých seniorů How do older adults cope with their ageing and age? A scale for an offensive strategy of Czech older adults Abstrakt Článek popisuje tvorbu a vlastnosti souhrnné škály, která charakterizuje ofenzivní, proaktivní strategii zvládání vlastního stárnutí a stáří. Data byla získána anonymním on-line dotazováním 1692 seniorů ve věku 65-84 let v červnu 2021. Škála ofenzivní strategie vykazuje dostatečnou vnitřní konzistenci a přijatelnou validitu a reliabilitu. Lidé s ryze ofenzivní strategií jsou častěji mladí senioři, stále výdělečně činní, s dosaženou VOŠ nebo VŠ, především z velkých měst, s dříve převažující duševní prací a s větším spektrem aktivit včetně aktivit v domácnosti. Výsledky jsou konzistentní s vybranými položkami dotazníku pohody (PGCM) podle M. P. Lawtona a s indexem emoční pohody WHO. Navržená škála ofenzivní strategie může být (spolu se škálou zde nediskutované defenzivní strategie) podkladem pro konstrukci validizovaného nástroje pro zjišťování chování, které senioři uplatňují při zvládání vlastního stárnutí a stáří.
