A capacitively coupled plasma polymerization system was designed and fabricated for plasma polyme... more A capacitively coupled plasma polymerization system was designed and fabricated for plasma polymer deposition. Transparent and light yellow colour plasma-polymerized diphenyl (PPDP) thin films were deposited by a dry and flawless process using the fabricated plasma polymerization system. The surface morphology of the PPDP film has been studied by scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM) and was observed to be uniform, pinhole and fracture-free. The studies of the PPDP using the elemental analysis (EA), xray photoelectron microscopy (XPS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and infrared (IR) spectroscopic analyses indicate that the PPDP is chemically and structurally different from that of the monomer diphenyl. The empirical formula of the PPDP film is C9.oJH4.0l01.06N0.46. The chemical characteristics of the PPDP thin films were studied by AES and XPS techniques and similar result was found. ABSTRACT The effect of the amount of Al2O3 content on microstructure, tetragonal phase stability ... more ABSTRACT The effect of the amount of Al2O3 content on microstructure, tetragonal phase stability and mechanical properties of 3YSZ-Al2O3 composites are investigated in this study. The ceramic composites are obtained by means of uniaxial compacting at 210 MPa and green compacts are sintered at 1550 °C for 3 h in air. The monoclinic zirconia (m-ZrO2) phase has completely been transformed into tetragonal zirconia (t-ZrO2) phase with corresponding higher Al2O3 content. The t-ZrO2 grains induce transgranular fracture mode that has contribution in improvement of fracture toughness. The maximum flexural strength of 340 MPa, Vickers hardness value of 14.31 GPa and fracture toughness of 5.1 MPa × m1/2 in the composition containing 40 wt.-% Al2O3 is attributed to the microstructure with t-ZrO2 grains as inter- and intragranular particles in the Al2O3 grains, which makes it suitable for dental applications.
