Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs and TAs), at most four-year universities in the United States,... more Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs and TAs), at most four-year universities in the United States, are both employees and students of their universities, but also make up the important next wave of teaching professionals in the higher education system. Graduate TAs gain valuable experience from being in the classroom as students of their respective programs, but arguably even more so through learning how to design curriculum, teaching undergraduate students, grading using constructive feedback, and in many cases, how to research a populous that they interact (the students that they teach) with on a day-to-day basis. As such, it is imperative that these future higher education faculty and professionals be supported in their development through routine mentoring and training practices. Instructional design and software design, while two different fields, have many commonalities and... more Instructional design and software design, while two different fields, have many commonalities and finding intersections between the two fields is of great importance to instructional designers, subject matter experts, and ultimately, the educators who use their deliverables. Many instructional designers work on large projects, which in certain circumstances; will include the creation of new learning software. This paper suggests that combining the Waterfall software-design model, with the ADDIE instructional-Design model, could create a more collaborative process between software designers and instructional designers. In this newly proposed design model, a combination of features of the two previous models allows for a seamless step-by-step design process.

Online education is an ever-growing aspect of many students' higher education learning experience... more Online education is an ever-growing aspect of many students' higher education learning experience. Its proliferation into each and every academic discipline is becoming an ever-present entity for university-level academic writing instruction and coursework. Through collecting pre-survey, mid-semester interview, and post-survey data in online and face-to-face sections of a same undergraduate writing course at a public west coast university, this research aims to promote a further understanding of student perceived readiness, student attitudes, student perceived ability, and their effects on student success in both online and face-to-face courses. Many students have preferences of how online instruction should be designed. While not every student share similar preferences with others, this research allows instructors to gain a firmer understanding of different student wants and needs. Most importantly, this research aims to support instructors who feel that online writing courses can be successful and can promote just as useful of learning as a face-to-face course does.

Many face-to-face and online course comparison studies have been conducted; however, few studies on writing courses directly compare online and traditional versions of the same course. This study allowed the researcher to determine student attitudes about writing courses and compared the effectiveness of two delivery methods by looking at student learning outcomes and perceived course achievement.

One's own Ikigai can be used as a barometer to gauge hopes, dreams, and aspirations relevant to all aspects of life. In this paper, the author reviews the effects of Ikigai on the Japanese education system through a review of the current literature. This narrative review aims to put together a cohesive and thorough structure to the literature, so that future studies can be done to explore life philosophy and how it can affect educational attainment and success, and technology's impact on educational Ikigai as well.

These principles include open communication and feedback, treating these future faculty members as an important and immediate investment of the academy, which ultimately leads to a more empowered and engaged workforce. Engaged GTAs ultimately will serve as not only better teachers for their undergraduate students, but will also provide a clearer articulation of what a successful graduate student is to the students that they teach.

First-Year Seminar (FYS) courses are commonly used by higher education institutions to onboard ne... more First-Year Seminar (FYS) courses are commonly used by higher education institutions to onboard new students, while also increasing academic success and retention. This mixed-methods study explored how using a social media platform, Slack, impacted hope, academic self-efficacy, career goals, sense of belonging and how these variables impacted student GPA, course grades, and retention after the first semester of study. The sample was formed from a total group of 1,000 incoming first-year students, with an n=131 participating during the pretest, posttest, or both surveys during the time of the study. The sample population was placed into three groups, with one intervention group receiving motivational and informational Slack Messages, another group receiving only informational Slack messages, and a control group that received neither. The 8 week intervention, which provided students motivational messages and videos through Slack, was provided to students in order to compare how the use of such material would compare to FYS courses that did not use such an intervention. The quantitative findings found no significant difference among the three groups after the end of the first semester of study. However, the results did find that academic self-efficacy and rejection and exclusion, in terms of one’s feelings towards sense of belonging, correlated and predicted FYS course grades and GPA at the end of the semester, while hope and careers goals did not. Qualitative results found that students who built connections with their peers and faculty, participated on campus, and could connect non-course activities with their major of study, had a deeper perception of their sense of belonging to campus. Further qualitative results about the intervention pointed to a need to improve how Slack was used in the intervention groups’ FYS courses, in order for the intervention to better impact students perceptions of the variables explored in the study. Qualitative results also pointed to many students having a deep understanding of what motivates them to succeed, how they can bridge the gap between academic study and their future careers, and how to work with others to achieve their dreams. Consequently, this study provides an insight into a potential intervention that can be used with students that is free and easy to setup, but needs further exploration into how the intervention can be best used to help students develop themselves.
