In this paper we introduce a method for exploiting entities from the emerging Web of Data for enh... more In this paper we introduce a method for exploiting entities from the emerging Web of Data for enhancing various Information Retrieval (IR) services. The approach is based on named-entity recognition applied in a set of search results, and on a graph of documents and identified entities that is constructed dynamically and analyzed stochastically using a Random Walk method. The result of this analysis is exploited in two different contexts: for automatic query expansion and for re-ranking a set of retrieved results. Evaluation results in the 2015 TREC Clinical Decision Support Track illustrate that query expansion can increase recall by retrieving more relevant hits, while re-ranking can notably improve the ranked list of results by moving relevant but low-ranked hits in higher positions.

Question Answering (QA) is a challenging topic since it requires tackling the various difficultie... more Question Answering (QA) is a challenging topic since it requires tackling the various difficulties of natural language understanding. Since evaluation is important not only for identifying the strong and weak points of the various techniques for QA, but also for facilitating the inception of new methods and techniques, in this paper we present a collection for evaluating QA methods over free text that we have created. Although it is a small collection, it contains cases of increasing difficulty, therefore it has an educational value and it can be used for rapid evaluation of QA systems.

SPARQL is a standard query language for retrieving and manipulating RDF data. However, the majori... more SPARQL is a standard query language for retrieving and manipulating RDF data. However, the majority of SPARQL implementations require the data to be available in advance, i.e., to exist in main memory or in a RDF repository (accessible through a SPARQL endpoint). Nonetheless, Linked Data exists in the Web in various forms; even an HTML Web page can contain RDF data through RDFa, or RDF data may be dynamically created by a Web Service. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate an extension of SPARQL 1.1, called SPARQL-LD, that allows to directly and flexibly exploit this wealth of data. SPARQL-LD allows to fetch, query and integrate in the same SPARQL query: i) data coming from online RDF or JSON-LD files, ii) data coming from dereferenceable URIs, iii) data embedded in Web pages as RDFa, iv) data that is dynamically created by Web Services, and v) data coming by querying other endpoints. A vast area of research in historical science concerns the analysis of historical archival source... more A vast area of research in historical science concerns the analysis of historical archival sources. This involves activities such as digitizing the historical sources, usually using spreadsheets or simple relational databases, and then analyzing the transcribed data using a range of methods depending on the kind of data and the type of research question that needs to be answered. In this paper, we describe the process of digitizing, curating and visualizing original archival sources of maritime history, a process done in the context of a European (ERC) project called SeaLiT. In particular, we present a set of innovative tools that have been implemented for supporting historians in transcribing the original sources and curating the transcribed data as well as a web application that visualizes the curated data on an interactive map. The overall process is demonstrated for the case of 16 original ship logbooks from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries kept by seven archives in Greece...

In the era of enormous information production human capabilities have reached their limits. The n... more In the era of enormous information production human capabilities have reached their limits. The need for automatic information processing which would not be incommensurate to human sophistication seems to be more than imperative. Information scientists have focused on the development of techniques and processes that would assist human contribution while improve, or at least guarantee, information quality. Automatic indexing techniques may lay on various approaches offering different results in information retrieval. In this paper we introduce an automated methodology for subject analysis, including both the determination of the aboutness of the documents and the translation of the related concepts to the terms of a knowledge organization system. Focusing on a corpus consisting of articles related to the Digital Library Evaluation domain, topic modeling algorithms are utilized for the aboutness of the documents, while the context of the words in topics, as captured by Word Embeddings, are used for the assignment of the extracted topics to the concepts of the EuroVoc thesaurus.
