Deep-sea benthic communities from the Weddell Sea, Antarctica, were sampled in January–April 2005... more Deep-sea benthic communities from the Weddell Sea, Antarctica, were sampled in January–April 2005 in an area located between 61°S–70°S and 0°W–49°W. We found a total of eight ascidian species that belong to five different families, of which one corresponded to a new species. These were: Protoholozoa pedunculata Kott, 1969; Corynascidia suhmi Herdman, 1882; Styela andeepensis Maggioni & Tatián sp. nov.; Culeolus suhmi Herman, 1881; Culeolus anonymus Monniot F. & Monniot C., 1976; Culeolus likae Sanamyan K. & Sanamyan N., 2002; Oligotrema lyra (Monniot C. & Monniot F., 1973) and Asajirus indicus (Oka, 1913). We report: the extension of the known distribution ranges of P. pedunculata, Corynascidia suhmi, Culeolus suhmi, C. likae and A. indicus, being the first time they are collected from the Weddell Sea; and the shallowest record of C. likae. Individuals of Corbicula largillierti were manually collected between 0 and 1 m depth from "... more Individuals of Corbicula largillierti were manually collected between 0 and 1 m depth from "Los Chorrillos" stream, at the upper part Suquía River Basin (Córdoba, Argentina 31.399849° S; 64.509624° W) during December 2017. Burial behavior data of Corbicula largillierti after four and eight weeks at 20 and 30ºC. The burial degree was included (completely, partially, or not buried). When burial degree was "completely buried" the burial time was measured. Burial time is the period since the bivalve introduces its foot in the sediment and the valve is positioned perpendicular to the sediment surface until the posterior end of the valves reaches the level. Burial behavior was tested under four different granulometries: coarse sand (0.5 - 1 cm), thin sand (0.2 - 0.5 cm), fine sand (0.1 - 0.2 cm) and very fine sand (<0.1 cm). Morphometric parameters (shell length (mm), shell height (mm) and dry mass without shell (g)) of each individual is included.

Taxonomic uncertainties and the lack of ecological knowledge can hinder the correct identificatio... more Taxonomic uncertainties and the lack of ecological knowledge can hinder the correct identification and the assignment of biogeographic status of marine species. The ascidian Asterocarpa humilis (Heller, 1878), originally described from New Zealand, has a broad distribution in shallow temperate areas of the Southern Hemisphere, having recently colonised areas of the Northern Hemisphere. A closely related species, Cnemidocarpa robinsoni Hartmeyer, 1916, has been reported in the South-Eastern Pacific and the South-Western Atlantic, and several authors considered it a junior synonym of A. humilis. We gathered for the first time morphological and genetic data from specimens from distant areas. We studied the morphology of specimens collected at seven locations of South America. We also re-examined specimens from museum collections and revised the available literature on these species.
