It is well known that certain variables can bias judgements about the perceived contingency betwe... more It is well known that certain variables can bias judgements about the perceived contingency between an action and an outcome, making them depart from the normative predictions. For instance, previous studies have proven that the activity level or probability of responding, P(R), is a crucial variable that can affect these judgements in objectively noncontingent situations. A possible account for the P(R) effect is based on the differential exposure to actual contingencies during the training phase, which is in turn presumably produced by individual differences in participants' P(R). The current two experiments replicate the P(R) effect in a free-response paradigm, and show that participants' judgements are better predicted by P(R) than by the actual contingency to which they expose themselves. Besides, both experiments converge with previous empirical data, showing a persistent bias that does not vanish as training proceeds. These findings contrast with the preasymptotic and transitory effect predicted by several theoretical models.

Calculations of (1)J(NH), (1h)J(NH) and (2h)J(NN) spin-spin coupling constants of 27 complexes pr... more Calculations of (1)J(NH), (1h)J(NH) and (2h)J(NN) spin-spin coupling constants of 27 complexes presenting N-H...N hydrogen bonds have allowed to analyze these through hydrogen-bond coupling as a function of the hybridization of both nitrogen atoms and the charge (+1, 0, - 1) of the complex. The main conclusions are that the hybridization of N atom of the hydrogen bond donor is much more important than that of the hydrogen bond acceptor. Positive and negative charges (cationic and anionic complexes) exert opposite effects while the effect of the transition states 'proton-in-the-middle' is considerable.

High level ab initio calculations have been used to study the relative stability of N-sigma and p... more High level ab initio calculations have been used to study the relative stability of N-sigma and pi configurations of the neutral alkaline derivatives of azoles. The N-sigma structure is the one normally expected for nonionized azolate salts. However, the results show that in the case of the pyrrole and imidazole the pi configuration is more stable than the N-sigma one. The preference of the N-sigma vs pi configurations is related to the presence or the absence of two contiguous nitrogen atoms in the azole ring. A search in the CSD shows that some pyrrolate and imidazolate salts exist in solid phase in the pi configuration.

Messenger RNA decay is a critical mechanism to control the expression of many inflammation- and c... more Messenger RNA decay is a critical mechanism to control the expression of many inflammation- and cancer-associated genes. These transcripts are targeted for rapid degradation through AU-rich element (ARE) motifs present in the mRNA 3' untranslated region (3'UTR). Tristetraprolin (TTP) is an RNA-binding protein that plays a significant role in regulating the expression of ARE-containing mRNAs. Through its ability to bind AREs and target the bound mRNA for rapid degradation, TTP can limit the expression of a number of critical genes frequently overexpressed in inflammation and cancer. Regulation of TTP occurs on multiple levels through cellular signaling events to control transcription, mRNA turnover, phosphorylation status, cellular localization, association with other proteins, and proteosomal degradation, all of which impact TTP's ability to promote ARE-mediated mRNA decay along with decay-independent functions of TTP. This review summarizes the current understanding of post-transcriptional regulation of ARE-containing gene expression by TTP and discusses its role in maintaining homeostasis and the pathological consequences of losing TTP expression.

In particular we report the measurements of eighteen levels belonging to the 3p4 4p and 3p4 4d configurations of Ar II. The dependence on electron energy of the excitation functions of some 3p4 4p levels was studied in the range 0-6000 eV.

[1,2,3]Triazolo[1,5-a]pyridine and 3-substituted derivatives were regioselectively metalated at t... more [1,2,3]Triazolo[1,5-a]pyridine and 3-substituted derivatives were regioselectively metalated at the 7 position using either Bu3MgLi or (TMP)3CdLi, the former at -10 degrees C and the latter at room temperature. The lithium arylmagnesates (R = H, Me, Ph) proved to react with iodine (34-75%) or 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzaldehyde (32-51%). Attempts to obtain the cross-coupling products using 2-bromopyridine under palladium catalysis failed, a result attributed to the low stability of these compounds. The corresponding lithium arylzincates reacted in 17-60% yield under the same reaction conditions. The lithium arylcadmates were either trapped with iodine (38-76%, R = H, Me, Ph, CN, 2-thienyl) or involved in palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions with 2-bromopyridine (26-67%, R = H, Me, Ph). For R = 2-pyridyl, 3-(6-iodo-2-pyridyl)-[1,2,3]triazolo[1,5-a]pyridine was isolated in 73% yield. (TMP)3CdLi also proved suitable for the clean dideprotonation of two substrates (R = H, 2-thienyl), a result demonstrated by quenching with iodine (66-75%).

The relation between the sympathetic nervous system and bone metabolism has been known for some t... more The relation between the sympathetic nervous system and bone metabolism has been known for some time, although diverse experimental studies do not show uniformity in their evaluation of the different data. The aim of this paper is to determine the relation between urinary catecholamines, as an expression of sympathetic activity, and bone mass among the general population. A study was made of 274 individuals (124 males and 150 females), who formed part of the Hortega cohort. All underwent measurement of fractionated catecholamines in urine (dopamine, noradrenaline and adrenaline) and calcaneal density, using a Pixi-Lunar (Lunar Corp., Madison, Wisc., USA). The linear correlation study revealed a statistically significant association of dopamine with bone mass (r = 0. 229, p = 0.0001), which was not observed with the other catecholamines. The effect was shown in men (r = 0.184, p = 0.04) and women (r = 0.251, p = 0.002). When a multiple correlation analysis was performed, the effect of the dopamine (p = 0.038) persisted. Our study shows that dopamine is an independent, positive variable for bone mass in men and women in the general population, and for the latter, it is independent of their hormonal state.

We have theoretically studied, in gas phase and using PCM-water solvation, the complexes establis... more We have theoretically studied, in gas phase and using PCM-water solvation, the complexes established by the biologically relevant guanidinium cation and simple aromatic systems (benzene, naphthalene and pyridine). In gas phase only hydrogen bonded complexes were obtained, whereas using PCM-water different cation-π complexes for the three aromatic systems were found. The interactions established within these complexes have been analyzed by means of the atoms in molecules and natural bond orbital approaches. Finally, experimental evidence of the cation-π interactions created by guanidinium was found in the crystal structure of N-(5-methylpyridin-2-yl)guanidinium chloride, which was also theoretically analyzed.
