Description

El retrato representa a un hombre joven, vestido con traje negro y lechuguilla y con la cabeza cubierta por una oscura gorra. Como es habitual en los ejemplos del retrato civil del siglo XVI, la figura aparece de busto, destacándose sobre un fondo neutro. La técnica de ejecución es muy precisa, más prieta y descriptiva en el tratamiento del tejido blanco del cuello y algo más suelta y flexible en la pintura del rostro. Este presenta un gesto decidido, definido fundamentalmente por el firme rictus de la boca y la directa y franca mirada que el personaje dirige al espectador. La anchura de la lechuguilla y la altura trasera del cuello que se eleva hasta tocar las orejas permiten datar la obra en la década de los años setenta, periodo al que también corresponde el diseño de la gorra, de copa algo elevada. Estas precisiones cronológicas sobre la vestimenta del retratado están relacionadas con la identificación del personaje (Texto extractado de Antonio, T. de, en: El retrato español en el Prado. Del Greco a Goya, 2006, p. 50).
Aunque no es seguro, se suele considerar esta obra un autorretrato de Sánchez Coello discípulo de Antonio Moro y primer retratista de corte de Felipe II.
