Industrialisation let to urbanisation in the Netherlands from 1860 onwards. Amsterdam was exploding, the population grew, and there were no houses. Cheap houses were build just outside the 'canals'. Round 1910 a law emerged stating that everyone was entitled to good housing and clean air. That was when these houses were build. The style (architecture) is known as: Amsterdam School. The houses were build for labourers just outside the city-centre. Nowadays these - usually large - houses are rather expensive and owned by so-called yuppies. You can find this style in Amsterdam-South and in Amsterdam-Rivierbuurt (River-neighbourhood)
