Trouting myself for the August 1st argument

edit
  Whack!

You've been whacked with a wet trout.

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know you did something silly.

A request

edit

Hey WestVirginiaWX. I would appreciate if you would strike your comment on User talk:Rlandmann about me. I apologized to him (see the section below your comment) and explained my reasoning. You said some stuff about me, which is basically just putting words in my mouth. I wanted to ask you here and not over there as to not start some big issue. I won’t be mad if you choose to not strike it, but since I have explained more or less that my world wasn’t upended, and I’m worried that X or Reddit will invade the discussions if/when a “famous” image is challenged (like Wikipedia had following the release of Greenfield’s 300+ mph winds), that is why I am caution. Either way, I would appreciate it, but it is your choice. Cheers! WeatherWriter (talk) 15:52, 15 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I’ve struck it out; but I would also appreciate that you don’t tell anyone else that they created chaos. Thank you. WestVirginiaWX (talk) 16:17, 15 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

RfC: Third-party images published by the National Weather Service

edit

I've now reviewed 1,000 images uploaded under the rationales expressed in the {{PD-NWS}} template and requested deletion of several.

The arguments for deletion, and to keep, are now following repetitive, predictable patterns and it would greatly help all involved if we could centralise discussion and obtain some wider community input.

Therefore, I have opened an RfC to gather opinions. Apologies in advance: it's long and detailed, but is frankly nothing compared to the words and time expended by all parties up to this point. Probably the most crucial issue revolves around how we interpret a general disclaimer published at weather.gov (Q.1 in the RfC).

Your advice is greatly appreciated! --Rlandmann (talk) 10:35, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Pings

edit

I want to clarify to @ChessEric and others about when I ping others on DRs and other discussions.

1. when you see me mass-pinging half a dozen (or more) people; usually, I ping everyone who had been involved in previous discussions on that file; and everyone who had recently been involved in related DRs, and usually everyone that I can think of in the relavant WikiProject.

2. when you see me using a ping instead of typing out the username. It is probably because I’m referring to that person; and it’s easier for me to do a ping in many cases than it is to write out the username.

I am well aware of the policies of canvassing and I promise that when I’m pinging a large number of people; I’m only trying to improve the quality of the discussion to achieve a more reliable consensus. And when I’m referring to people with pings; it’s probably because that particular comment concerns them in some way (usually because of something they have said or done). So I promise I am not trying to canvass or distort consensus in any way shape or form. Hurricane Clyde 🌀my talk page! 19:37, 4 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Am going to append this: as of Sept 14, 2024; I am generally not going to be pinging large groups of people without a demonstrated need of doing so. Hurricane Clyde 🌀my talk page! 16:13, 14 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Yann Complaint

edit

Hi, Please do not ping me for NWS files. I also don't think you should ping others. Yann (talk) 17:37, 13 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Yann, I’m sorry about that. I was trying to ping any random administrator I knew of at the top of my head per Rlandmann’s rationale and confirmations. I am always the type to try to run it through people familiar with the speedy deletion process and formalities (like you) rather than unilaterally tag it for speedy deletion. I’d rather be told on the discussion that it doesn’t meet the criteria rather than have my tag reverted. Hurricane Clyde 🌀my talk page! 17:44, 13 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Yann, what should I do from now on, if I think it could potentially meet speedy deletion criteria? Hurricane Clyde 🌀my talk page! 17:44, 13 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
But I promise; from now on, the only time you’re getting pinged in an NWS-related DR is if I am specifically talking about you in the comment (eg. “@Yann said this this and this”). As I almost always ping the person if I mention them in the discussion. See above comments as it’s often times easier for me to ping them than it is to write out the full username. Hurricane Clyde 🌀my talk page! 17:51, 13 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
If files really meet the speedy deletion criteria, they should be tagged with {{SD}} with the required information. But I think no NWS file meets these criteria. They are not obvious copyright violations, since each file must evaluated carefully. Yann (talk) 17:52, 13 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Also, rather than creating multiple DRs with the same arguments, it would be better to create one for several files. I follow many DRs related to NWS files, and I see that several people have different opinions about them. If they all agree about deletion, then the decision could be must faster. Yann (talk) 18:04, 13 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I’m not the one creating the DRs; @Rlandmann is. Hurricane Clyde 🌀my talk page! 18:01, 13 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

ChrisWx complaint

edit

I'm going to refrain from commenting on any further DRs you ping me on until I hear back from Yann, as I'm unsure how close to breaking the canvassing policy doing so is, and would like to hear advice from an administrator on it before continuing. Thanks, ChrisWx ☁️ (talk - contribs) 23:24, 13 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

  • @ChrisWx; I had studied up on the canvassing policy. When pinging with a neutral intent (like I’m doing); it’s not wrong and not canvassing. Canvassing is when you’re pinging people in a biased manner with the intent of swaying consensus.
  • My pings are to people who have a wide range of opinions on the issue (eg. WeatherWriter and ChessEric tends to support keeping and I tend to support deletion); so I know for a fact I’m not swaying consensus. I’m just trying to facilitate discussions because in many cases they go stale rather quickly.
  • I do understand the whole canvassing rule. Which again is why I prefer to ping everyone rather than just one or two people.
Hurricane Clyde 🌀my talk page! 23:28, 13 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
But by all means; please seek advice. Because I don’t even know a lot of the policies. Hurricane Clyde 🌀my talk page! 23:29, 13 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I also wanted to give you some advice on how much you message people at once - if you post several talk page comments within quick succession, it increases the amount of pings they receive and may frustrate the receiving user to where they may not want to respond to what you say. I just wanted to give you a quick pointer to prevent editors from being turned off of what you have to say. If I were to make a comment on a talk page, I'd post the message, then maybe edit once if I felt it was necessary, and not edit it again, so I'd say please refrain from editing/posting an editor's talk page more than once or twice until they respond in order to avoid something like this happening, and thank you. Sir MemeGod complaint

edit

I'd suggest not pinging so many people at once, and repetitively. I've been pinged at least thirteen times now in discussions in the last eleven days that I wasn't aware of, which could potentially be breaking the canvassing policy (and it is quite frankly a bit annoying to be constantly pinged). Also, please do not continue to ping me on deletion discussions, I will no longer respond to them. While I'm not going to bring this to any noticeboard because it may not even break policy, I just wanted to make you aware. I also see that other editors have already talked with you about this, so apologies if I am piling on. Thanks! :) Sir MemeGod ._. (talk - contribs) 04:17, 14 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

No I’m glad you responded. I ain’t going to ping anyone on here anymore unless I am actually trying to talk to them or I am explicitly mentioning them. You are now the fourth person I think that has complained. Hurricane Clyde 🌀my talk page! 16:08, 14 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
And @Sir MemeGod, about the noticeboard; number 1, one of the complaints I got was from an administrator; and number 2, ChrisWx ended up going [to the same] administrator over it. See User talk:Yann; but again, I am sorry and I’m definitely glad that everyone complained because it shows just how stupid that was to ping everyone into a DR who probably didn’t want to be pinged. Not to mention the canvassing policy. Hurricane Clyde 🌀my talk page! 16:12, 14 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
