Aside from impacts to the HVAC systems for Clemson University, the effects of this new invasive species are still under investigation. Our studies have shown negative phototaxis, indeifference with respect to geotaxis, and now include experiments regarding fecundity, dispersal in a controlled environment, and metabolic rates. Using individual tags and an experimental pond segmented into observation regions, we will follow hundreds of individual snails, their locations, their individual growth, and individual reproduction over their entire lives. This is the first comprehensive study of its kind for a new invasive species in a newly invaded habitat. We will also study the factors influencing their metabolism in laboratory experiments. The Upper Savannah River watershed has numerous impoundments, and the three largest hydroelectric... more The Upper Savannah River watershed has numerous impoundments, and the three largest hydroelectric reservoirs, from north to south, are Hartwell, Richard B. Russell, and J. Strom Thurmond Lakes. During the summer months, these reservoirs undergo thermal and chemical stratification, which results in the formation of cool, hypoxic/anoxic hypolimnia and warm, oxic epilimnion. To maintain fisheries habitat, the United States Army Corps of Engineers operates a hypolimnetic oxygenation system in the forebay of Richard B. Russell Lake. The purpose of this system is to improve the water quality of the releases from Richard B. Russell Dam by maintaining a dissolved oxygen concentration of 5 to 6 ppm. Under anoxic conditions in the hypolimnion, some metals and nutrients become soluble, and as water is released from the reservoir during hydroelectric generation, these dissolved nutrients can be transported downstream. BACKGROUND: Limnological studies traditionally involve collecting water samples or in situ measur... more BACKGROUND: Limnological studies traditionally involve collecting water samples or in situ measurements at discrete depths at a limited number of sampling locations assumed to be representative of regions of a lake or reservoir. In small reservoirs, a single location may be used, usually at the deepest location or in front of the dam. Large systems demand more sampling locations, which are sometimes selected using statistical design criteria (Thornton et al. 1982; Gaugush 1986, 1987). Regardless of the approach followed, there is an implicit assumption that each sample location characterizes a region of the reservoir whose extent is limited by half the distance to the next sample location, often on the scale of kilometers.

Russell (RBR) Dam and Lake was authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1966 (Public Law 89 789, 89th Congress, House Resolution 18233) and was completed in 1983. Water quality investigations associated with the construction of RBR Lake were initiated in 1983. These investigations were designed to identify the effects of the new lake on J. Strom Thurmond (JST) Lake, as well as the water quality changes occurring in the new lake. Addition of pumped storage operation at RBR Dam, justified on an economic basis, raised environmental concerns, particularly related to fish entrainment and impingement during pumped operation, and water quality impacts. A phased testing and monitoring program was designed and implemented to address these concerns. Technological advances in instrumentation now offer new opportunities for the collection of fine-scaled, spatially explicit water quality data for lakes, reservoirs, and rivers. Described here are practical considerations for developing and applying strategies employing Global Positioning Systems (GPS), multiparameter sondes, and towed submersible vehicles. Equipment and sample design approaches are demonstrated based on example applications. Limitations and potential advantages are discussed.

Over the last 75 years, the Lake Issaqueena watershed has experienced a drastic shift in land use. This study was conducted to examine the changes in land cover and the implied changes in land use that have occurred and their environmental, water quality impacts. Aerial photography of the watershed (1951, 1956, 1968, 1977, 1989, 1999, 2005, 2006, and 2009) was analyzed and classified using the geographic information system (GIS) software. Seven land cover classes were defined: evergreen, deciduous, bare ground, pasture/grassland, cultivated, and residential/other development.
