DeskripsyonThreadstem gilia, Linanthus filiformis (45126064235).jpg |
threadstem gilia, Linanthus filiformis, California, White Mountains, Antelope Springs, Deep Springs Valley, elevation 1716 m (5630 ft). This is another of my favorite unsung heroes of the desert. Emerging from the desert seed bank only when the amount and timing of winter rains are just right, and seldom noticed even then, this wispy annual species finishes its life cycle above ground in just a few weeks before returning to the camouflage of seeds in desert gravel. This species is nearly endemic to the Mojave Desert of the southwestern United States, extending a short distance into adjacent portions of the southern Great Basin and western Sonoran deserts. It is found below about 1800 meters (5900 feet) elevation, with a preference for the spaces in rocky soil cover. |
