This review article provides more information about the incidence of helminths affect the gastroi... more This review article provides more information about the incidence of helminths affect the gastrointestinal tracts of poultry in different countries, life cycle, clinical picture, diagnosis, and prevention and control measures of such infections. Backyard and deep litter production systems show higher helminth infections than cage system. Moreover, the incidence of helminth infection is more common in tropical countries of Africa and Asia than of European ones due to the suitability of environment and management conditions. Nematodes and cestodes are the most common gastrointestinal helminths of avian species, followed by trematodes. The life cycles of helminths may be direct or indirect, but the infection is usually through faecal-oral route. Affected birds show general signs, low production performance parameters, and even death due to intestinal obstruction and rupture. Lesions of the infected birds reveal catarrhal to haemorrhagic enteritis according to the severity of infection. Diagnosis of affection is mainly based on post mortem examination or microscopic detection of eggs or parasites. As internal parasites adversely affect the host causing poor feed utilization and low performance, thus intervention control strategies are urgent. Prevention and control strategies are relied on application of strict biosecurity measures, eradication of intermediate hosts, early routine diagnosis, and continuous application of specific anthelmintic drugs. Deworming using herbal medicine is recent and successful and may be good alternative to chemicals. In conclusion, helminth infections of poultry remain a major hurdle against the profitable production in poultry producing countries and necessary preventive and control measures should be strictly applied by poultry producers.

Ornithobacteriosis is an important emerging respiratory disease of domestic and wild birds caused... more Ornithobacteriosis is an important emerging respiratory disease of domestic and wild birds caused by Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT) bacterium. The disease has been detected in some countries since 1980, which rapidly spread worldwide later on. Ornithobacteriosis can transmit either horizontally or even vertically. Infection with ORT is mainly characterized by respiratory distress, poor performance, acute death, and a drop in egg production. However, the most characteristic necropsy lesions of dead turkeys and chickens are yoghurt like airsacculitis and pneumonia, usually unilateral. Unfortunately, infection with ORT was misdiagnosed in most of the poultry flocks due to similarity with other respiratory pathogens and the lack of the ideal protocols for diagnosis. Recently, some molecular and serological techniques have been used to detect the infection. Treatment of ORT with antibiotics is very difficult and variable as a result of acquired resistance. Many vaccines have been developed to counteract such infection in broiler, layers, and breeder chicken and turkey flocks. Inactivated, live, and sub-unit vaccines have been used with satisfactory results. Thus, this review paper aimed to address ornithobacteriosis, emphasizing the distribution, transmission, clinical picture, diagnosis, and disease control.

Zinc (Zn) is a unique micro-mineral because it is an essential component in many enzymes such as ... more Zinc (Zn) is a unique micro-mineral because it is an essential component in many enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, carbonic anhydrase, and alkaline phosphatase, as well as being important for regulation of proteins and lipids metabolism, and sex hormones. This mineral is applied in poultry production in three forms; inorganic, organic, and nanoparticle form. The nano-form of Zn is preferable in application to other conventional forms with regard to absorption, bioavailability, and efficacy. Broilers fed on diets supplemented with Zn showed improvement of growth performance, carcass meat yield, and meat quality. In addition, Zn plays an important role in enhancing of both cellular and humeral immune responses, beside its antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. In laying hens, dietary addition of Zn improves the eggshell quality and the quantity of eggs. Moreover, Zn has a vital role in breeders in terms of improving the egg production, fertility, hatchability, embryonic development, and availability of the hatched chicks. Therefore, this review article is focused on the effects of using Zn on the performance and immunity of poultry, as well as its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties with special reference to the hazardous effects of the misusing of this mineral.
