ABSTRACT This paper describes and provides initial experimental results for a new purification me... more ABSTRACT This paper describes and provides initial experimental results for a new purification method for raw natural gas (NG) streams. The method removes CO 2, NG liquids, H2S, and most other NG impurities as desublimation or condensation products. The focus of this paper is on CO 2. Desublimation occurs in a patent-pending, desublimating heat exchanger that operates efficiently and continuously and uses a contacting liquid as an intermediate stream. The contacting liquid provides a non-fouling desublimation surface and direct-contact heat transfer, making it both robust and efficient in continuous operation. The solid CO2 and contact liquid form a slurry until separated through filtration or other solid-liquid physical separation methods. The contact liquid cools in a conventional heat exchanger and recycles to the desublimating heat exchanger. The cold purified CO2 and purified natural gas products pass through a regenerative heat exchanger to cool incoming raw natural gas, melting the purified solid CO2 stream in the process. This process is capable of operating at various pressures and temperatures, both of which affect the final impurity levels. Compared to conventional CO2 removal processes, this process does not require changes in process pressure and does not involve condensation or reboiling in a distillation column. It also combines what currently are several operating steps into a single process. These features decrease overall energy losses and both capital and operating expenses.
ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to outline the potential role of biomass for power generati... more ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to outline the potential role of biomass for power generation. The fuels and technologies are critically reviewed to establish a pathway for increasing power production from biomass as part of an increased contribution from renewable energies. Policy and economic issues establish near-term and long-term priorities and issues. Technologies include biomass cofiring with coal, traditional dedicated biomass power plants, and advanced systems. Fuels include wood residues, agricultural residues and energy crops. The result is a comprehensive roadmap for introducing biomass power that minimizes the cost and impact to society while optimizing the implementation of biomass and other residues. Relatively low-risk options such as cofiring and sustaining use of existing dedicated facilities are seen as the best near-term technologies. Residues are seen as the best first-step fuels. Advanced systems and energy crops are seen as essential components if power generation will ever approach sustainable levels.
