Comparison of psychological and physiological responses to imposed vs. self-selected high-intensity interval training. J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2018-High-intensity interval training elicits similar physiological adaptations as moderate intensity continuous training (MICT). Some studies report greater enjoyment to a bout of high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) vs. MICT, which is surprising considering that HIIE is more intense and typically imposed on the participant. This study compared physiological and perceptual responses between imposed and self-selected HIIE. Fourteen adults (age = 24 ± 3 years) unfamiliar with HIIE initially performed ramp exercise to exhaustion to measure maximal oxygen uptake (V[Combining Dot Above]O2max) followed by 2 subsequent sessions whose order was randomized. Imposed HIIE consisted of eight 60 seconds bouts at 80 percent peak power output (%PPO) separated by 60 seconds recovery at 10 %PPO. Self-selected HIIE (HIIESS) followed the same structure, but participants freely selected intensity in increments of 10 %PPO to achieve a rating of perceived exertion (RPE) ≥7. During exercise, heart rate, V[Combining Dot Above]O2, blood lactate concentration (BLa), affect (+5 to -5), and RPE were assessed. Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale was measured after exercise. Results showed higher V[Combining Dot Above]O2 (+10%, p = 0.013), BLa (p = 0.001), and RPE (p = 0.001) in HIIESS vs. HIIEIMP, and lower affect (p = 0.01), and enjoyment (87.6 ± 15.7 vs. 95.7 ± 11.7, p = 0.04). There was a significantly higher power output in self-selected vs. imposed HIIE (263.9 ± 81.4 W vs. 225.2 ± 59.6 W, p < 0.001). Data suggest that intensity mediates affective responses rather than the mode of HIIE performed by the participant.

It has been suggested that low birth rates may be one reason for these declines. Estimating birthrates for wild populations, however, is often difficult and expensive. As new technologies are incorporated into wildlife research, novel approaches to estimating birth rates are waiting to be discovered. One specific way new technologies are being used in wildlife research is through the use of radio collars that save and transmit location information through satellites. For example, researchers studying wolves have used this location information to identify kill sites by patterns of restricted movement. Until now it has been very hard to determine birth rates for moose populations. The goal of my project is to test whether we can use GPS location information to identify when and where moose cows give birth. I will use data gathered by the Washington Moose Demography Project. This data was collected from 67 collared cow moose in the early summer of 2014 and 2015. This novel method I am developing may be an effective and low-cost tool for estimating moose birth rates

ABSTRACTThe Samarina Hotel is located close to the sea, at 12 m s.n.m., at La Libertad, Province of Santa Elena. It was constructed at the end of the decade of the 50. The hotel has a ground floor and three high floors and it has reinforced concrete structures with surface of 26382. In the Ecuador and principally at Province of Santa Elena, has a high seismicity conditions because of it are located near to the zone of subduction of the Nazca South plates. An evaluation and structural diagnosis was performed, according to NEC 2011 proceeding, and also with the uniform codes of building UBC97. It is important to indicate that the actual building does not fulfill the design seismic resistant requirements. To improve the level resistant earthquake was performed. A system of reinforcement, spendthrifts' compound of energy placed in the lateral faces and columns reinforcement in four levels that compose the building was implemented with the software free ETAB's.

However, predicting responses is complicated because species are complex and may adapt or respond in distinct ways. Riddellet al.compared a century-old dataset on species richness in the Mojave against modern surveys to measure climate-related changes in bird and small mammal communities. They found little change in mammal richness or occupancy but large declines across birds. They attribute these differences to differences in microclimate opportunities: Specifically, mammals can mitigate temperature impacts through burrowing, whereas birds are generally more exposed.Science, this issue p.633

Rapid diagnostics such as the Unyvero Lower Respiratory Tract Panel (LRTP) can identify specific pathogens to narrow antibiotic use even further when combined with the DRIP score.MethodsUsing an existing patient pool from a clinical trial of the LRTP ({"type":"clinical-trial","attrs":{"text":"NCT01922024","term_id":"NCT01922024"}}NCT01922024) a DRIP score was determined for each patient. When data elements of the DRIP score were unavailable a DRIPmax and DRIPmin were calculated assuming all missing elements were positive or negative respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of the DRIP score vs culture and LRTP were determined. An algorithm for antibiotic selection based on the results of the DRIP score combined with the LRTP was applied to each patient (Fig 1) . Figure 1.Open in a separate windowAntibiotic Selection Algorithm for DRIP Score and Unyvero Lower Respiratory Tract PanelResultsThe sensitivity of the DRIP score vs culture in this population was 91.2% and the specificity was 65.1%. DRIP score vs culture + LRTP combined had a sensitivity of 86.6% and a specificity of 66.3%., the lower sensitivity was mainly due to Stenotrophomonas maltophilia Applying the algorithm to each patient based on the DRIP score and the LRTP improved antibiotic choices by reducing broad spectrum antibiotic and by more selectively targeting the identified pathogens earlier and eliminating use of multiple empiric antibiotics.ConclusionUsing an antibiotic stewardship algorithm combining DRIP score with LRTP rapid diagnostic data, which results in 5 hours, can lead to improved prediction of the presence of drug resistant pathogens and aid in narrowing antibiotics. The LRTP compensates for the DRIP score only predicting presence of antibiotic resistant pathogens, not specific pathogens. The DRIP score can compensate for the LRTP only having limited antibiotic resistance markers on panel and not supplying phenotypic antibiotic resistance testing. Further study using a prospectively collected cohort with antibiotic adjustment in real time is needed for validation of our results.Disclosures Matthew Sims, MD PhD, Astra Zeneca: Grant/Research Support|ContraFect: Grant/Research Support|Crestone: Grant/Research Support|Diasorin Molecular LLC: Grant/Research Support|Epigenomics Inc: Grant/Research Support|EUROIMMUN US: Grant/Research Support|Finch Theraputics: Grant/Research Support|Genentech USA Inc: Grant/Research Support|Janssen Research and Development LLC: Grant/Research Support|Kinevant Sciences GmBH: Grant/Research Support|Leonard-Meron Biosciences: Grant/Research Support|Lysovant: Grant/Research Support|Merck: Grant/Research Support|OpGen: Grant/Research Support|Prenosis: Advisor/Consultant|Prenosis: Grant/Research Support|Qiagen: Grant/Research Support|Regeneron Pharmaceuticals: Grant/Research Support|Seres Therapeutics Inc: Grant/Research Support|Shire: Grant/Research Support|Summit Therapeutics: Grant/Research Support.

Research to date has focused on thermoregulatory responses to air temperatures (Ta) below body temperature (Tb). Consequently, the thermoregulatory performance of small mammals exposed to high Ta is poorly understood, particularly responses across geographic and seasonal scales. We quantified the seasonal thermoregulatory performance of four cricetid rodents (Neotoma albigula, Neotoma lepida, Peromyscus eremicus, Peromyscus crinitus) exposed to high Ta, at four sites in the Mojave Desert. We measured metabolism, evaporative water loss and Tb using flow-through respirometry. When exposed to Ta≥Tb, rodents showed steep increases in Tb, copious salivation and limited evaporative heat dissipation. Most individuals were only capable of maintaining Ta–Tb gradients of ∼1°, resulting in heat tolerance limits (HTLs) in the ra...
