I argue that the mestizo petitionary record was made as an ‘archival’ countermove to the exclusionary legislation that in the 1570s targeted individuals of Spanish-Native parentage, and that chiefly aimed to bar them from the provincial priesthood. In that petitionary record, the probanza—a notarial form of sworn witness testimony—played a key role in the realignment and readjustment of the archival record pertaining to mestizos; one that had a changing impact in the ensuing crown legislation of the late 1580s, and that served as ‘foundational’ legal precedent in future Hispano-Andeans' appeals at the Council of the Indies, in Madrid.

The research focuses on two related and little-known documents from the 1580s, a 1584 memorial to King Philip II and a 1583 Latin letter to Pope Gregory XIII (English translation included in the Appendix). Part of a larger paper trail, these documents offer an important record of Andean activism before the church and the crown, set within the larger context of post-conquest struggles for the New World. The topic of mestizo agency is framed in terms of how colonial subjects actively engage in variable and adaptable strategies, through which they seek to reformulate their identity, place, and position within the Spanish colonial world."

It examines in particular how the questionnaires Juan López de Velasco prepared are related to other ‘fact making’ documents common to the legal-bureaucratic system of the Hispanic monarchy. The article argues that the questionnaires are indeed genealogically linked to official documents such as informaciones and probanzas—legal instruments which sought to ascertain matters of fact and to establish firm grounds for claims to ‘truth.’ The research therefore posits an important connection between law and cosmographic activity at the core of López de Velasco’s projects.

It argues that although Velasco's tenure (1571-1591) at the Council of the Indies saw a high point in the accumulation of historiographic knowledge and information about Castile's Spanish-American possessions, the structural peculiarities of the cosmographer-chronicler's office disposed Velasco to prudently eschew writing an official history of the Indies. To appreciate and understand those peculiarities, the article focuses on three interrelated factors: the patronage networks at the royal court and their relation to monarchical bureaucracy; the Council of the Indies administrative reforms that led to the creation of the chief cosmographer-chronicler's office; and the climate of secrecy and censorship regarding knowledge of the Indies during Philip II's reign. The overarching emphasis, however, entails a consideration of the relationship between knowledge about Castile's American territories and monarchical bureaucracy, from the perspective of the Habsburg royal court in Madrid.

It is argued that in the polemic on history-writing there are important clues as to how early moderns conceived and elaborated distinctions between historical and literary writing. The articulation of that difference developed in close association and engagement with discourses of ‘fact,’ rooted as they were in the Spanish legalistic tradition. The analysis of the interrelation of history and fiction offers evidence of how contemporary readers interpreted the Lazarillo de Tormes in the early 1560s.

It argues that the expurgated Lazarillo is an important ‘missing’ part of the history of Lazarillo de Tormes (1554), and sets out to unearth the silences, gaps, and omissions that prevail around the censored text in the study and history of this canonical work. Acknowledging and understanding the relative ‘silencing’ of Lazarillo castigado (1573) in Lazarillo studies redresses a significant lacuna in the editorial, reception, and cultural history of the work. It also offers and establishes for readers a fruitful reciprocity for reinterpreting the 1554 Lazarillo and for reading the Lazarillo castigado.

The picaresque narrative suffered textual ‘‘reform’’ at the hands of the Inquisition in the 1570s, was later associated by Madrid book editors with the Guzmán de Alfarache (1599), and was also appended to a popular conduct treatise, Galateo español (c. 1582), at the dawn of the seventeenth century. The analysis centers on the interconnected nature of market, audience, and literary production as it considers the various ways in which the Lazarillo was refashioned and recontextualized to fit its historical environments since its first appearance in 1554. A key aspect of the investigation seeks to understand the logic behind the repeated editorial pairing of the pícaro’s expurgated narrative of self-representation and a treatise on self-fashioning like the Galateo español."

As basis or foundation of the tale, the breaks and fissures are interpreted as an antistructure, and in that sense in “El licenciado Vidriera” one finds a narrative without basis or foundation —similar to that of “El coloquio de los perros”— which grows and develops in a fragmentary manner. The emphasis placed on breaks and fissures also leads to a reflection on the question of the origin and purpose of the narrative. The end result of such consideration is the realization that in this exemplary tale there is a drive toward the displacement of beginnings and ends.
