Updated MLB Farm System Rankings After 2024 MLB Draft

Now that the 2024 MLB draft is officially in the books, it's time for an updated look at how all 30 MLB farm systems stack up.

The following factors helped determine the placement of players and teams:

    • Potential (Player): Potential trumps production a lot of the time, especially in the lower levels of the minors and with recent draft picks. Skill sets and tools are often better indicators of what kind of player someone will be.
    • Talent (Player): As for those in the higher levels of the minors who are close to breaking through to the big leagues, production and talent were the determining factors, as these players are viewed as more complete products.
    • Overall Depth (Team): Having one or two elite prospects is great, but a deep farm system is the way to build a sustainable contender. Depth and talent were the biggest factors in ranking each team.
    • High-End Talent (Team): There is a difference between a prospect who has a chance of making an impact in the majors and a prospect who could be a star. Elite prospects served as a tiebreaker when teams were close in the rankings.

A tier system was used to help differentiate the varying levels of individual talent:

    • Tier 1: Prospects who have elite skill sets and All-Star potential. This is the cream of the prospect crop. These players make up B/R's Top 100 prospect list, which was updated earlier this week.
    • Tier 2: Prospects who have a good chance of becoming impact contributors. These are the players who were in consideration for spots on B/R's Top 100 prospect list and could end up there in the future.
    • Tier 3: Prospects who profile as fringe MLB contributors or young players who are still too raw to project any higher. This tier represents the bulk of prospects around baseball, though more than a few could climb to the next tier.

Teams were initially ranked based on the average tier ranking of their top 10 prospects, and the rankings were then subjectively tweaked from there.

Note: A player must not have passed the rookie-eligibility limits (130 at-bats, 50 innings pitched, 45 days on an active roster prior to September roster expansion) to be included in these rankings.

    Top 10 Prospects

    1. LHP Ricky Tiedemann (Tier 1)
    2. 2B Orelvis Martinez (Tier 2)
    3. RHP Trey Yesavage (Tier 2)—2024 Draft Pick
    4. IF/OF Addison Barger (Tier 2)
    5. RHP Fernando Perez (Tier 3)
    6. SS Arjun Nimmala (Tier 3)
    7. SS Leo Jimenez (Tier 3)
    8. LHP Adam Macko (Tier 3)
    9. RHP Nolan Perry (Tier 3)
    10. SS Josh Kasevich (Tier 3)

    Prospect Spotlight: RHP Trey Yesavage

With a durable 6'4", 225-pound frame and strong performance this spring, Yesavage emerged as the consensus No. 3 college pitcher in the 2024 draft class. He went 11-1 with a 2.03 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 145 strikeouts in 93.1 innings, and he has a chance to be one of the steals of the 2024 draft after getting buzz inside the Top 10 throughout the predraft process.

29. Miami Marlins

    Top 10 Prospects

    1. RHP Noble Meyer (Tier 1)
    2. LHP Thomas White (Tier 1)

    6. OF Luis Cova (Tier 3)
    7. OF Dillon Head (Tier 3)
    8. RHP Jacob Miller (Tier 3)
    9. OF Victor Mesa Jr. (Tier 3)
    10. SS Carter Johnson (Tier 3)—2024 Draft Pick

    Prospect Spotlight: OF PJ Morlando

One of the top prep bats in the country heading into the spring, Morlando had an inconsistent senior season, but the Marlins still decided to swing for the fences on his offensive upside in the middle of the first round. He needs to prove he can get to his raw power in games and show he's not a bottom-of-the-scale athlete.

28. Kansas City Royals

    Top 10 Prospects

    1. 1B/LHP Jac Caglianone (Tier 1)—2024 Draft Pick

    7. LHP Frank Mozzicato (Tier 3)
    8. LHP Mason Barnett (Tier 3)
    9. LHP David Shields (Tier 3)—2024 Draft Pick
    10. RHP Felix Arronde (Tier 3)

    Prospect Spotlight: LHP David Shields

Two-way star Jac Caglianone was the headliner of the Royals draft haul at No. 3 overall, but prep left-hander Shields has a chance to develop into a top-tier prospect in his own right. The 6'2", 210-pound southpaw reclassified from the 2025 draft and does not turn 18 years old until Sept. 9, but he already has three plus pitches, advanced command and clean mechanics.

27. Los Angeles Angels

    Top 10 Prospects

    4. OF Nelson Rada (Tier 2)
    5. RHP Dioris De La Rosa (Tier 3)
    6. C Dario Laverde (Tier 3)
    7. RHP Barrett Kent (Tier 3)
    8. SS Denzer Guzman (Tier 3)
    9. RHP Chris Cortes (Tier 3)—2024 Draft Pick
    10. 2B Adrian Placencia (Tier 3)

    Prospect Spotlight: SS Joswa Lugo

The Angels gave Lugo a $2.3 million bonus as one of the top prospects in the 2024 international class, and he has made a great first impression with a .371/.427/.534 line and 14 extra-base hits in 32 games in the Dominican Summer League. The 17-year-old has a ton of physical projection remaining in his 6'3", 187-pound frame.

26. Houston Astros

    Top 10 Prospects

    5. RHP A.J. Blubaugh (Tier 2)
    6. OF Luis Baez (Tier 2)
    7. RHP Miguel Ullola (Tier 3)
    8. OF Zach Cole (Tier 3)
    9. 3B Zach Dezenzo (Tier 3)
    10. IF Shay Whitcomb (Tier 3)

    Prospect Spotlight: SS Brice Matthews

The Astros took Matthews with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2023 draft following a 20-homer, 20-steal junior season at the University of Nebraska. The 22-year-old is showing a better hit tool than expected and making a strong case for inclusion on Top 100 lists, batting .276/.397/.481 with 16 extra-base hits and 17 steals in 42 games across three levels while reaching Double-A.

25. San Diego Padres

    Top 10 Prospects

    1. SS Leodalis De Vries (Tier 1)

    3. LHP Robby Snelling (Tier 2)
    4. RHP Adam Mazur (Tier 2)
    5. LHP Kash Mayfield (Tier 2)—2024 Draft Pick
    6. RHP Victor Lizarraga (Tier 3)
    7. RHP Dylan Lesko (Tier 3)
    8. RHP Isaiah Lowe (Tier 3)
    9. 1B Romeo Sanabria (Tier 3)
    10. OF Homer Bush Jr. (Tier 3)

    Prospect Spotlight: LHP Robby Snelling

Snelling was flying up leaguewide Top 100 lists last year when he went 11-3 with a 1.82 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 118 strikeouts in 103.2 innings over three levels while reaching Double-A as a teenager in his pro debut. The 20-year-old has struggled to a 6.14 ERA and allowed a .305 opponents' batting average in 70.1 innings at Double-A to start the 2024 season, but he still has tremendous upside.

24. Atlanta Braves

    Top 10 Prospects

    1. RHP Hurston Waldrep (Tier 1)
    2. RHP AJ Smith-Shawver (Tier 1)
    3. RHP Owen Murphy (Tier 2)
    4. LHP Cam Caminiti (Tier 2)—2024 Draft Pick
    5. RHP JR Ritchie (Tier 2)
    6. C Drake Baldwin (Tier 2)
    7. SS Jose Perdomo (Tier 3)
    8. SS Nacho Alvarez Jr. (Tier 3)
    9. RHP Drue Hackenberg (Tier 3)
    10. RHP Didier Fuentes (Tier 3)

    Prospect Spotlight: RHP Didier Fuentes

Signed for a modest $75,000 out of Colombia in 2022, Fuentes has taken a significant step forward in his second year at the Single-A level. The 19-year-old has a 2.23 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and a 75-to-17 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 60.2 innings, and he is checking the necessary boxes to continue developing as a starter despite an undersized 6'0", 170-pound frame.

23. Texas Rangers

8 of 30

    Emiliano Teodo

    Top 10 Prospects

    1. SS Sebastian Walcott (Tier 1)
    2. RHP Emiliano Teodo (Tier 1)
    3. RHP Winston Santos (Tier 2)
    4. RHP Alejandro Rosario (Tier 2)
    5. IF Justin Foscue (Tier 2)
    6. C Malcolm Moore (Tier 2)—2024 Draft Pick
    7. 3B Gleider Figuereo (Tier 3)
    8. RHP Jack Leiter (Tier 3)
    9. OF Dustin Harris (Tier 3)
    10. RHP Joseph Montalvo (Tier 3)

Prospect Spotlight: RHPs Emiliano Teodo and Winston Santos

The Rangers have had a tough time developing pitching talent over the years, but with Teodo (14 GS, 1.71 ERA, 89 K, 68.1 IP) and Santos (14 GS, 3.13 ERA, 93 K, 72.0 IP) turning heads at the Double-A level that trend might chance in the near future. Both players are undersized, but their stuff should play in the majors in the near future.

22. New York Yankees

9 of 30

    Jasson Dominguez

    Top 10 Prospects

    1. OF Jasson Domínguez (Tier 1)
    2. OF Spencer Jones (Tier 1)
    3. C Agustin Ramirez (Tier 2)
    4. OF Everson Pereira (Tier 2)
    5. C/1B Ben Rice (Tier 2)
    6. SS Roderick Arias (Tier 2)
    7. LHP Brock Selvidge (Tier 3)
    8. RHP Chase Hampton (Tier 3)
    9. SS George Lombard Jr. (Tier 3)
    10. LHP Henry Lalane (Tier 3)

    Prospect Spotlight: C/1B Ben Rice

Rice has made a splash since he was called up for his MLB debut on June 18, posting a 123 OPS+ with six home runs and 19 RBI in 92 plate appearances while filling in for the injured Anthony Rizzo at first base. He is on the older end of the prospect scale at 25 years old, but he could be the club's long-term answer at first base.

21. Arizona Diamondbacks

    1. SS Jordan Lawlar (Tier 1)

    4. OF Druw Jones (Tier 2)
    5. SS Tommy Troy (Tier 2)
    6. OF Ryan Waldschmidt (Tier 2)—2024 Draft Pick
    7. LHP Yu-Min Lin (Tier 3)
    8. C Adrian Del Castillo (Tier 3)
    9. OF Slade Caldwell (Tier 3)—2024 Draft Pick
    10. 1B/3B Ivan Melendez (Tier 3)

Prospect Spotlight: 1B Deyvison De Los Santos

The D-backs almost lost De Los Santos during the offseason when he was selected by Cleveland in the Rule 5 draft and then returned after not making the Opening Day roster. The 21-year-old is hitting .331/.380/.650 with 27 home runs and 82 RBI in 82 games between Double-A and Triple-A, but as a prospect whose value comes exclusively in the batter's box, it's tough to slot him as a Top 100 prospect.

20. San Francisco Giants

11 of 30

    Top 10 Prospects

    1. 1B Bryce Eldridge (Tier 1)
    2. RHP Hayden Birdsong (Tier 1)
    3. SS Marco Luciano (Tier 1)
    4. OF James Tibbs III (Tier 2)—2024 Draft Pick
    5. LHP Carson Whisenhunt (Tier 2)
    6. LHP Joe Whitman (Tier 3)
    7. LHP Reggie Crawford (Tier 3)
    8. OF Rayner Arias (Tier 3)
    9. OF Dakota Jordan (Tier 3)—2024 Draft Pick
    10. LHP Jack Choate (Tier 3)

    Prospect Spotlight: OF Dakota Jordan

Jordan hit .354/.459/.671 with 20 home runs and 72 RBI as a draft-eligible sophomore at Mississippi State this spring, and the former football recruit has an intriguing mix of athleticism and raw power. It's likely going to take an above-slot deal to get him signed after he slipped to the fourth round, and he was getting plenty of first-round buzz leading up to the draft.

19. Pittsburgh Pirates

    1. RHP Bubba Chandler (Tier 1)

    7. 3B/OF Charles McAdoo (Tier 3)
    8. LHP Hunter Barco (Tier 3)
    9. RHP Zander Mueth (Tier 3)
    10. LHP Anthony Solometo (Tier 3)

    Prospect Spotlight: 3B/OF Charles McAdoo

A 13th-round pick in the 2023 draft out of San Jose State, McAdoo hit .325/.396/.572 in 133 games during his college career, and he is shaping up to be one of the steals of his draft class. The 22-year-old is batting .323/.407/.557 with 19 doubles, 13 home runs, 59 RBI and 16 steals in 78 games between High-A and Double-A in his first full professional season.

    4. LHP Cooper Hjerpe (Tier 2)
    5. IF Thomas Saggese (Tier 2)
    6. RHP Tekoah Roby (Tier 3)
    7. C Jimmy Crooks (Tier 3)
    8. C Leonardo Bernal (Tier 3)
    9. OF Victor Scott II (Tier 3)
    10. RHP Ian Bedell (Tier 3)

    Prospect Spotlight: C Jimmy Crooks

The Cardinals have done a nice job developing catching talent over the years, and Crooks is the next one climbing the pipeline. The 22-year-old was a fourth-round pick out of Oklahoma in 2022, and he is hitting .309/.416/.466 with 20 extra-base hits in 59 games at Double-A, and he is also an above-average defender behind the plate.

17. Washington Nationals

    1. OF James Wood (Tier 1)

    8. 3B Yohandy Morales (Tier 3)
    9. RHP Andry Lara (Tier 3)
    10. OF Daylen Lile (Tier 3)

    Prospect Spotlight: RHP Travis Sykora

Sykora was one of the more projectable prep starters in the 2023 draft class, and the Nationals signed him to a way-above-slot $2.6 million deal as a third-round pick. The 6'6", 232-pound right-hander did not pitch after signing last year, but he has a 2.78 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 63 strikeouts in 45.1 innings at Single-A this season.

    8. SS Joendry Vargas (Tier 2)
    9. 2B Jeral Perez (Tier 3)
    10. OF Eduardo Quintero (Tier 3)

    Prospect Spotlight: SS Alex Freeland

Freeland had a lackluster 2023 season, hitting .240/.345/.362 in 106 games at High-A Great Lakes, but the 2022 third-round pick has exploded offensively this season. The 22-year-old is hitting .277/.418/.490 with 24 doubles, 12 home runs, 51 RBI and 21 steals in 83 games this year, and his stock has climbed as much as any prospect in the system.

    8. SS Sammy Stafura (Tier 3)
    9. RHP Julian Aguiar (Tier 3)
    10. SS Ricardo Cabrera (Tier 3)

    Prospect Spotlight: RHP Chase Burns

After two solid seasons at Tennessee, Burns transferred to Wake Forest and emerged as arguably the best pitcher in college baseball, going 10-1 with a 2.70 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 191 strikeouts in 100 innings this spring. Time will tell if passing on 2024 Golden Spikes winner Charlie Condon at No. 2 overall is a decision the Reds come to regret.

    8. LHP Carson Palmquist (Tier 3)
    9. OF Jordan Beck (Tier 3)
    10. RHP Brody Brecht (Tier 3)—2024 Draft Pick

    Prospect Spotlight: LHP Carson Palmquist

The Rockies have found a top-tier pitching prospect in Chase Dollander, but don't sleep on Palmquist as another arm that could emerge as an impact contributor in the not-too-distant future. The 23-year-old has a 3.39 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 98 strikeouts in 69 innings at Double-A, and a deceptive delivery helps his stuff play up without limiting his command.

    9. RHP Logan Henderson (Tier 3)
    10. 3B Luke Adams (Tier 3)

    Prospect Spotlight: 1B/3B Mike Boeve

With a unique 60-hit, 40-power offensive profile, Boeve does not fit the prototypical corner infielder profile, but he has a chance to provide enough batting average and on-base ability to outperform his lack of power. The 22-year-old is hitting .327/.401/.436 with an 11.4 percent walk rate in 66 games between High-A and Double-A.

    9. RHP Jack Perkins (Tier 3)
    10. C Daniel Susac (Tier 3)

    Prospect Spotlight: OF Colby Thomas

The A's might have found one of the best power hitters in the 2022 draft class when they selected Thomas out of Mercer University in the third round. The 23-year-old is hitting .284/.350/.553 with 26 doubles, 18 home runs, 63 RBI and 14 steals in 81 games between Double-A and Triple-A, and his power will play at the next level.

    10. RHP Mavis Graves (Tier 3)

Prospect Spotlight: RHP George Klassen and LHP Samuel Aldegheri

Rising pitching prospects Klassen (14 GS, 1.97 ERA, 89 K, 59.1 IP at A/A+) and Aldegheri (14 GS, 3.08 ERA, 103 K, 73.0 IP at A+/AA) were both well off Philadelphia's Top 10 prospect list when the season began, and their rise has helped offset a brutal season from former Top 100 prospect Mick Abel.

The University of Florida alum has a 1.71 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 85 strikeouts in 73.2 innings between High-A and Double-A.

The O's acquired McDermott in the deal that sent Trey Mancini to the Houston Astros at the 2022 trade deadline. After racking up 152 strikeouts in 119 innings last year, he has continued to impress this season at Triple-A, posting a 3.70 ERA and 128 strikeouts in 90 innings. The 25-year-old will need to improve his command to stick as a starter, but his stuff could play right now in the MLB bullpen.

The 23-year-old is batting .358/.410/.399 with 103 hits, 27 walks and 62 steals in 69 games between High-A and Double-A, and he could be an impact player at the next level even with bottom-of-the-scale power.

    9. RHP Daniel Espino (Tier 2)
    10. 1B/OF C.J. Kayfus (Tier 3)

    Prospect Spotlight: LHP Alex Clemmey

The Guardians selected Clemmey with the No. 58 overall pick in the 2023 draft and signed him to a $2.3 million bonus as one of the top prep arms in last year's class. The 6'6", 205-pound southpaw made his pro debut this season at Single-A, and he has racked up 84 strikeouts in 60.2 innings while limiting opposing hitters to a .217 average.

    9. IF Michael Arroyo (Tier 2)
    10. RHP Ryan Sloan (Tier 2)—2024 Draft Pick

    Prospect Spotlight: RHP Ryan Sloan

The Mariners farm system is so loaded that this year's No. 15 overall pick Jurrangelo Cijntje with his unique switch-pitching profile does not quite crack their organizational Top 10 list. Instead, the No. 10 spot goes to second-round pick Ryan Sloan, who has a strong 6'5", 220-pound frame and electric present stuff, giving him a profile closer to a college pitcher than the standard projectable prep arm. Both are in good hands in an organization that knows how to develop pitching.
