Ayala Paz
Ayala is a PhD Candidate of the Politics and Government department at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Her study seeks to explore the contemporary worldwide refugee phenomenon according to the contemplation of the political theorist, Hannah Arendt, mainly her understanding of the dangers hidden in a stateless position in the modern era and in a nation-states world. Ayala have an undergraduate and graduate degree in Politics and Government, from Ben-Gurion University, and her M.A. study focused on Hannah Arendt's political theory, focusing on the universal memory of the Holocaust and the need to learn lessons exceeding the solution of the Jewish problem. She offered an original reading of Arendt's "Eichmann in Jerusalem", as an expression of her perception of the political sphere, the individual's mental and moral activity and totalitarian regimes, in accordance to the way she analyzed them in "The Origins of Totalitarianism". Currently, she studies the unique agency of minority women in refugee situations and through the Intersection paradigm, she explores the multiple and varied meanings of the Hijab for refugee Muslim women in Germany. Her recent publications include “In the shadow of dark times: Hannah Arendt’s "Eichmann in Jerusalem" and the problem of thinking in modern era” published in 2018 in "Holocaust Studies", “Yearning for a home: Hannah Arendt and Peter Bergson on the Palestinian refugee problem” published in 2019 in "Ethnopolitics", and “‘It reminds me that I still exist.’ Critical thoughts on Intersectionality; refugee Muslim women in Berlin and the meanings of the Hijab” published in 2020 in Ethnic and Migration Studies. Nowadays Ayala is a Lecture at the Conflict Management and Resolution Program at Ben-Gurion University, and at the Department of Sociology, Political Science and Communication at the Open University.

Chancellor Angela Merkel in August 2015, approximately 550,000
refugee women, mainly from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan arrived in
Germany. Studies that address the realities of immigrant Muslim
women, primarily through the perspective of intersectionality, do
not pay enough attention to the millions of immigrants whose
legal status is as yet undefined. This article explores the
experiences of hijab-wearing refugee women in Berlin and how
they are viewed as the ‘other’ in a multicultural country like
Germany. Focusing on refugees who arrived in Germany in the
last five years, we conducted interviews with 25 refugee Muslim
women. Thematic analysis of the data revealed three central
themes: (1) racism, violence and exclusion; (2) empowerment and
liberation; and (3) preserving identity and belonging to a
community. The women’s narratives demonstrate how this added
dimension of subordination – refugeeness – transforms their lived
experiences, highlighting the lingering centrality of citizenship in
an age many identify as post- or transnational. Intersectional
analysis of the interviews suggests that gender, racism and
Islamophobia, and legal status cannot be entirely disentangled
and that Muslim refugee women who wear the hijab, often
experience very different forms of discrimination than their non-hijab wearing counterparts.
