Books
This book focuses on the ‘workshop’ of the reward policies, the first post-revolutionary period 1828-1844. It presents in detail the main material and moral rewards, offered to the fighters by the Greek state. Moreover, it explains how these policies created a model for rewarding the veterans of the subsequent national struggles, during the 19th and 20th century.
The game of the rewards had two sides: the demands of the veterans and the state aspirations. Among them existed foreign agents, personal friendships and rivalries, selfish interests, social differences and national aspirations. The multifaceted history of the rewards emerges from a multitude of sources, combined in a way that highlights the relationships between individuals and governments, private and public discourse, glory and agony, recognition and denial, that always characterise the transition from the excitement of the national struggles to the compromises and the pragmatism of the next day.
Πώς πορεύτηκαν μετά την Επανάσταση του 1821 οι συντελεστές της; Πώς το ελληνικό κράτος αντιμετώπισε τους άνδρες και τις γυναίκες που συμμετείχαν στην Παλιγγενεσία; Ποιες ανταμοιβές επιφύλαξε στους πολεμιστές, τους πολιτικούς, τους «εσωτερικούς πιστωτές» και τους πολεμοπαθείς, αυτόχθονες και ετερόχθονες;
Thesis Chapters
The purpose of the dissertation is the multiperspective approach of the rewarding policies towards the veterans of the Greek Revolution, from 1828 to 1844. In this context, the evolution of freedom fighters to an inclusive, distinct and also distinguished group of people within the national state was closely examined. In particular, the research focused on the diversity of veterans’ claims (for Constitution, political rights, medals, military and political offices, appointments, compensations, lands, pensions) and the means of promotion and fulfilment. The thesis consists of six chronological chapters and the addendum. Starting point of every chapter is the presentation of the political framework. Next, I examine the theory and the implementation of the laws, the decrees and the resolutions, concerning veteran rehabilitation. This structure enabled the representation of the interaction between general and special demands, economic developments, government practices and the forging of the particular, veteran identity. Certainly, the multidimensional yet underrated role of aristeion (campaign medal) is emphasized throughout the analysis and the conclusions. Finally, I unveiled the constant dialogue between commitments made by the governments on one hand and veterans’ expectations, disillusionment, reactions, pride, anguish and glory on the other. Main sources of the thesis were the legislation of that era, the Archive of Honorary Awards (General State Archives), the Archive of the Fighters (National Library of Greece), the Press and veteran Memoirs.
The total of the names collected from our sources are found in the annex of the thesis, in two analytical lists. In first list there are only the ancient Greek names and in the second list there are all the names. The ancient Greek names are accompanied by their etymology, their historical dimension and also by their reference in the inscriptions, that certify their presence in ancient Greece, with emphasis in Macedonia. The reference in the post-byzantine presence or absence of each name is also noteworthy. Finally, we should say that we also offer some information in the other names, as without these observations their presence and their distribution would remain inapprehensible.

The Institutional Framework and the Bureaucracy of the Rehabilitation of the Fighters of the Greek Revolution, 1821-1906
What were the legislative commitments and decisions regarding the rehabilitation of the contributors of the Greek Revolution? Which moral and material rewards did the Greek state reserve for warriors, politicians, ‘internal creditors’ and war-affected individuals?
This article focuses on the bureaucracy of the rehabilitation of the liberators of Greece, from the beginning of the revolution until the dawn of the 20th century. It presents the diversity of the fighters' claims and respectively their rewards (medals, military and political offices, appointments, compensations, lands, pensions, political rights), the work of the evaluation committees and also the interaction between veterans’ demands, socio-economic circumstances and governmental practices.
The article first of all, outlines the institutional framework, on which the rehabilitation of the fighters was based. Next, it examines three crucial episodes of the whole process: the establishment of aristeion (commemorative medal, 1834) and the evolution of its awards until December 1836, the National Assembly’s (1843-1844) resolutions regarding the veterans and their implementation, and finally, the work of the last Struggle Committee (1865-1877).
The primary sources for this article include the relevant 19th century legislation, the Archive of Aristeia (General State Archives, 1833-1865), the Archive of the Fighters (National Library of Greece, 1865-1877) and the Greek Press (1828-1877).
