Ethylene is considered to be an important feedstock for the production of a vast number of petroc... more Ethylene is considered to be an important feedstock for the production of a vast number of petrochemical products such as Ethyl Alcohol, Vinyl Chloride, Styrene, to name a few, and is the leading chemical compound in terms of the production of a variety of useful derivatives including Polymeric materials, antifreeze, solvents, surfactants, etc… The design specification is to design a plant to produce 600,000 tons of polymerization-grade Ethylene from Ethane. Therefore, several alternatives were investigated and compared to optimize the production rate of Ethylene. Criteria used in selecting the optimum process will be based on the general design objectives mentioned below: • Reaction pathways. • Maximizing ethane recovery (yield). • Ensure plant reliability, ease of operation and maintainability. • Environmental compatibility. The selected process for the production of ethylene is Thermal cracking with steam where the recovery of Ethylene was calculated to be 99.9%
