Businesses exist because of and are managed by humans who are also governed by the principles of nature. Additionally, businesses are increasingly interested in sustainability and regenerative systems. It follows that permaculture may be an appropriate technology to apply to business management and, if it is, would be of interest to businesses looking to integrate or transition to sustainable practices. Due to the fact that this concept is still relatively new, the author relies on secondary sources, utilizing a literature review and analysis to explore and evaluate permaculture applications in general business management.
This exploratory thesis investigates possibilities in applying permaculture to general management and provides specific examples and analysis of how businesses already do so, albeit oftentimes without the knowledge or intention of using permaculture. Using a theoretical approach, permaculture will be applied to general management with many examples coming from a strategic human resources perspective. Each of the three permaculture ethics and twelve design principles are explained and explored in relation to general business management. The conclusion and findings present specific ways managers can implement the permaculture ethics and principles in their management practices and finally, areas for further research are offered.
