On Audiences

5/6/24

Who do we create for?

I write letters for people who will never read them

Again and Again

making for myself
an imagined audience to keep me company
through the act of self-expression

Over and Over

enabling the compulsion
to compel virtual witness to my performances
of birth and self-immolation

But these imagined audiences are more than just
blank slates upon which to project myself onto

they are black holes
within which
I am allowed to
disappear,
entirely

The act of creation is a selfish one and
done for myself, unreservedly

But it must be noted
that "myself" is very often less a person
than it is a valley of ghosts

sitting in an empty field
conversing amongst themselves
