Since the end of World War II, the Spratlys have been entangled in a complex web of sovereignty and maritime claims between six littoral states. The dispute over sovereignty and maritime claims to the islands in the South China Sea has been extensively discussed in the hope of obtaining equitable solutions for all the claimants. However, despite decades of negotiation, the claimants have not reached any agreement. The situation in the region has become more problematic because of China’s growing military projections in the South China Sea. This thesis seeks to assess the possibility of resolving the disputes, employing the debate between classic IR theories such as structural realism and neoliberalism on what outcome to expect.
