GET IT DONE

Take inventory... of your home

Catalogue your stuff with Under My Roof.

Whether for insurance claims or your own peace of mind, having a record of all your belongings can be incredibly handy. Under My Roof (the successor to longtime Mac favourite Home Inventory) takes the drudgery out of the process.

Under My Roof lets you go deep with details. Record the make, model, serial number, purchase date and price, location in your home and more. Drag and drop scanned receipts, product manuals, photos and other relevant documents. Your data syncs across your devices via iCloud and you can share synced inventories with others.

But the app does much more than just catalog possessions: It can create 3D room layouts, organize insurance coverage and claims, track supplies and maintenance and even ease the hassle of moving.

Ready to get your home inventory in order? Follow these tips:

1. Make room

Before you enter items, make the default locations match the rooms in your home. (Use the plus sign button below the Locations list to add rooms; Control-click any room and choose Delete to remove it.) This will make it easy to group your belongings by location, so you can quickly see, for example, what’s in the basement in case of flooding.

Your days of digging through files to find warranty info are over.

2. Go mobile

Instead of carrying your Mac around the house (or to your garage, attic or storage unit), use Under My Roof on your iPhone and iPad. It’s a convenient way to quickly add a room full of items, including photos, and flesh them out later on your Mac. And the app automatically recognises QR codes and barcodes, so you don’t have to type long serial numbers.

3. Use the Inbox

Don’t have time to create a record from a photo or PDF immediately? Inbox to the rescue! While viewing the photo or PDF on your Mac, iPhone or iPad, simply click the Share button and choose “Add to Under My Roof Inbox.” (You may need to enable the Share extension on your devices using the instructions in the app.)

To view and use saved media later, click Inbox in Under My Roof’s options menu. Select an image or PDF and click New Item to create a new record with photos attached as images and PDFs used as receipts. Or add saved media to an existing record by opening its photos or receipts tab, clicking +,and choosing From Inbox.

Under My Roof creates a summary for each room; don’t forget to log money you’ve spent on the room itself!

4. Create a container

Have a bookcase full of books, a curio case of collectibles or a drawer of diaries? Instead of cluttering the room’s list with dozens or hundreds of items, create a Container that hosts the records for everything stored inside it.

First create a record for the storage item (in whatever room it resides in), then Control-click that record and choose Can Contain Other Items. The storage item will now appear in the location list so you can add items to it.

5. Start a collection

Under My Roof’s Collection feature makes it simple to view related items, such as all your tools or everything in your trainer or record collection. When entering a new item, just scroll down to choose a collection. (Under My Roof doesn’t provide default collections; you create them as needed.)

Put your collectibles anywhere in your house – Under My Roof tracks them by room or collection.

6. Read the room

Use Under My Roof on a recent iPhone or iPad to quickly scan each room and create a scaled 3D model of its layout including windows, doors, couches, tables and other large objects. These views are handy for quickly getting rough measurements, whether you’re at home on your Mac or out shopping with your iPhone.

To create a scan on iPhone or iPad, touch and hold any room and choose View to see the room’s details, then tap the + button and choose From Room Scan.

7. Keep covered

In addition to letting you store details about your insurance policies, Under My Roof provides coverage analysis, which means it can alert you to belongings that might not be covered. This is especially important if you have expensive treasures such as guitars or jewellery that often require supplemental coverage. You can also document and track any claims you’ve made.

8. Upgrade your upkeep

Track supplies like light bulbs, air filters, and batteries using Under My Roof’s Supplies view. For each item, don’t forget to include the part or model number (so you can be sure to buy the right refill) and the quantity you have on hand - Under My Roof can notify you when you’re getting low, and even create a report of purchases for budget planning.

The app also tracks—and reminds you to perform - maintenance tasks. Add one by clicking the + button on the upper-right and choosing Maintenance Task; view tasks, and check off those you complete, in the Maintenance Schedule. Any supplies you use are automatically deducted from your supply inventory. You’ll never forget to check your smoke alarms—or run out of extra batteries for them—again!

You’ll need your favourite unpacking music – the Moving Boxes feature helps you figure out which box to open first!

9. Get moving

Moving to a new home? Under My Roof’s Moving Boxes feature lets you keep track of what you place in each box – and even search for items so you don’t have to dig through boxes to find a particular item. The app even creates box names for easy labeling.
