Viktor (Paskov) and Kemal (Demirel): Our Memory Is Sacred, Why We Need to Tell it
Bulgarian and Turkish national literature have their own unique historical development.
Despite drawing from disparate sources and experiencing different foreign influences, the two literatures offer opportunities for comparative research. The absence of sufficient comparative studies which promises to provide us with interesting results is one of the blank spaces in the field of academic pursuits of Bulgarian-Turkish literary relations. This text sets itself the modest task of juxtaposing two authors of modern Bulgarian and Turkish literature: Viktor Paskov and Kemal Demirel. Additionally, it will point out some of the similarities and differences in the two writers’ two most famous works: the novels The Ballad of Georg Henich and The People of Our Home, which appeared in the mid-1980s.

considered the progenitor of children’s musical bands and popularizer of children’s choral singing and children’s operetta in Bulgaria. From 1923 to 1935 he was a singing teacher at the Bulgarian primary school „Josif 1“ in Istanbul, at the same time leading the Exarchate Mixed Choir and the Children’s Musical Band „Macedonka“. In the present text, based on materials from the Bulgarian archives, memories and publications in periodicals, we make an attempt to provide a more comprehensive presentation of his musical and pedagogical activity in the city near the Bosphorus. As a teacher of singing, reading and liturgy at the Bulgarian School, he revived the activity of the exarchal mixed choir and established the Children’s Music Band „Macedonka“. With their active school and out-of-school events, the two choirs led and conducted by Dimo Boychev unite the Bulgarian community in the city and bring variety to the busy workday of gardeners and dairy farmers. The programs of concerts, parties and evenings, which are held on various occasions, include performances of Bulgarian and Turkish songs, including folk songs, and operettas. Dimo Boychev plays a mediating role between Bulgarian and Turkish musicians.

In later centuries, the ties are strengthened by the facts that Bulgarian rulers provided assistance for the construction of churches and monasteries in the holy city and also that a large number of Bulgarian clergy settled in Jerusalem, which has turned into an important moral, spiritual and cultural center. It is seen that pilgrimage became widespread among the Bulgarians, who were Ottoman elements, in the 18th century, and now the worldly person endures all the troubles of this spiritual journey. The Bulgarian decides to go on pilgrimage after he has a certain amount of money, and he does not give up on his intention despite knowing all the difculties and dangers he will face along the way. The Bulgarian's motivation to go on pilgrimage is based on religious as well as worldly reasons. On the one hand, it is aimed to see all the places and locations in the holy history of Christianity and to worship there, on the other hand, the prestige and privilege of being a pilgrim in the society are taken into consideration. The word pilgrim almost turns into a title and it provides convenience in social relations, especially for those who are engaged in trade. Some Bulgarians who made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land then write down their journeys by land and sea, their impressions of Jerusalem, and their glorious reception at home. In this study, on the basis of the testimonies of four Bulgarians who visited the holy city for pilgrimage in the mid-19th century, the grueling land and sea journeys, the spiritual excitement in Jerusalem and the disappointment caused by the rude behavior of the clergy, and the order created by the Ottoman law enforcement ofcers for the safety of the pilgrimage are discussed.

Today, every Bulgarian finds the unique city on the Bosphorus very close to himself. However, the first travel book focusing on Istanbul in Bulgarian literature was written quite late, at the end of the 19th century. In order to explain this delay, it should be taken into account that the traveler in Bulgaria emerged in the 1890s, when the Bulgarian society tried to articulate with modern life with inevitable pains. In the works written in previous years and containing the main elements of the travel book, it is seen that the local geography is covered and the borders of the Ottoman Empire are not exceeded. In this study, after giving brief information about the place of the capital in Bulgarian history, the description of Istanbul by the famous poet and journalist Petko Slaveykov (1866) and the impressions of Istanbul (1888) published in a journal by the first Bulgarian physician with a doctorate, Dimitir Mollov, who is the author of the first Istanbul travel book in Bulgarian literature, are mentioned. The life story of Todor Yankov and some observations about the mentioned work are emphasized. The author, who is not content with only visiting the glittering places and places of the city with a European traveler's approach, descends to the curved streets of Istanbul, walks among the stray dogs and phaetons on the streets, wanders in the bazaars, sips Turkish coffee in the coffeehouse, and shares the passion of the disciple in the lodge. Todor Yankov's effort to revive the ordinary person and the monotonous life adds a special value and originality to the travelogue. The fact that the ancient city is not only concerned with the projections of the Bulgarian national and spiritual history can be explained by the fact that it represents a generation that has adopted European values and has a different worldview. Keywords: Bulgarian Literature, Istanbul, Travelogue, Petko Slaveykov, Dimitir Mollov, Todor Yankov.

The specific purpose of the then 19-year-old young man's trip to the old Ottoman capital was to sell the offices in the commercial inns owned by his father, a famous abadji craftsman who had died suddenly before his birth. During the journey which lasted several months, the son, together with his uncle, went around the city and the surrounding villages to collect his father's money. Thus, the author founds himself in the village of Susurluk, where a compatriot of his from Kalofer had settled down and lived for some time with his family.

military and spiritual history. Today, every Bulgarian finds the unique city on the Bosphorus very close to himself. However, the first travel book focusing on Istanbul in Bulgarian literature was written quite late, at the end of the 19th century. In order to explain this delay, it should be taken into account that the traveler in Bulgaria emerged in the 1890s, when the
Bulgarian society tried to articulate with modern life with inevitable pains. The life story of Todor Yankov and some observations
about the mentioned work are emphasized.

Dimo Boychev plays a mediating role between Bulgarian and Turkish musicians.
başkanı Prof. Dr. Leman Ergenç’in hayatı ve akademik çalışmaları
üzerinde durulmaktadır.
